Episode 1_The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House Filming Locations You Can Visit
日本語版/Japanese version
Netflix drama The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House was filmed in Kyoto.
Below are some places you can visit in Kyoto and my recommendations.
And trivia about Kyoto culture.
Please visit Kyoto and find your favorite.
I hope everyone likes Japanese culture and Kyoto.
Episode 1 - 04:30
Kiyo and Sumire arrived in Kyoto from Aomori; the typical Kyoto scenery is from Donguri Bridge. (団栗橋)
You can enjoy the beautiful Kamogawa River (鴨川), Minamiza(南座) Kabuki Theater, and the mountains.
The east side of the Kamogawa River is the Geiko(芸妓) and Maiko(舞妓) districts where Kiyo and Sumire live.
Episode 1 - 04:40
Kiyo and Sumire met Maiko-san in front of the Tatsumi shrine. (辰巳大明神)
This is a very touristy place; you can meet real Maiko-san if lucky. Please do not take photos without asking them if it is OK.
Episode 1 - 05:00
Kiyo and Sumire finally arrive at Gion(祇園), excited about their new life but a bit nervous.
Like a back-in-time scenery is the Hanami Koji(花見小路)
Episode 1 - 05:20
Kiyo and Sumire passed through the gate to SAKU.(朔)
It's been two years from the shooting to the release of the dorama; there is no more the gate.
The gate was the dorama set.
Episode 1 - 13:20
Kiyo's predictions were correct, and lunch on that day was Somen noodles. Kiyo was holding a famous Somen called Ibonoito. (揖保乃糸)
Episode 1 - 13:30
Typical Japanese summer scene: sitting on the porch, turning on the fan, and eating Somen noodles.
Sumire said; Here are the Myoga and green onion. Myoga(みょうが) is Japanese ginger in summer. It suits Somen noodles and Tofu.
Episode 1 - 20:20
The traditional dance Master said, "There is the Japanese pepper in there, right? The Hararyokaku one?"
Hararyokaku(原了郭) was established in 1703, and the secret family recipe is handed only to one son.
My favorite is KUROHICHIMI(黒七味). Please try Japanese pepper with UDON or TENDON. You can eat Hararyokaku dishes at Kyoto Station.
Episode 1 - 22:30
Maikos wearing beautiful and elegant Kimono. (着物)
OKAZEN is a famous kimono shop in Kyoto that supports this filming and also supplies kimonos to Maiko-san and Geiko-san for real.
If you want a high-quality traditional kimono, OKAZEN is the place to go. However, the real kimono is not affordable.
Episode 1 - 24:30
Momoko was going to Ozashiki (お座敷), a banquet, to perform her trained traditional dance. Sumire attended to support Momoko by bringing Momoko's bag.
Gion Tatsumi Bash (祇園巽橋) is one of the famous photo spots.
I would not list where not for tourists.
