Episode 2_The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House Filming Locations You Can Visit
日本語版/Japanese version
Netflix drama The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House was filmed in Kyoto.
Below are some places you can visit in Kyoto and my recommendations.
And trivia about Kyoto culture.
Please visit Kyoto and find your favorite.
I hope everyone likes Japanese culture and Kyoto.
Episode 2 - 02:50
Kiyo, Sumire, and Maikos left the house for Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社)to pray to improve their Maiko skills.
Episode 2 is about July. The Gion Festival (祇園祭) held in July is one of the biggest festivals in Japan. Also, the Gion Festival is one of the most important festivals of the Yasaka Shrine. If you come to Kyoto in July, you can enjoy various events at Yasaka Shrine, the Gion area, and the center of Kyoto.
Episode 2 - 03:20
Chiyo and Azusa walked out of the path from SAKU.
It's been two years from the shooting to the release of the dorama; the gate is no longer there. Or the gate was the dorama set.
Episode 1 - 05:20 is the same.
Episode 2 - 04:50
A disciple brought Japanese tea and confectionery to the Mai Master and Azusa.
It was Senjyu Senbei(千寿せんべい), a very famous Kyoto sweet.
I guess the Mai Master wanted this "langue de chat" instead of Senjyu Senbei.
OKOICHA, delicious matcha flavor cookies.

I recommend you visit the Kyoto Station Hachijoguchi shop, where you can buy the OKOICHA langue de chat and enjoy fresh-baked seasonal cakes with Japanese-style black tea.

Episode 2 - 10:00
Azusa and Professor Tanabe walked in Kamigamo Shrine, (上賀茂神社) listed in the UNESCO World Heritage.
Episode 2 - 11:40
Sumire saw Kiyo's back and could not call out in front of the Tatsumi shrine. (辰巳大明神)
Episode 1 - 04:40 is the same.
Episode 2 - 12:40
Kiyo gave candy to Sumire.
I'm not sure which candy maker supplied the candy to this dorama. Kyoto has several famous candy makers. I guess Gion Koishi is the candy maker.
Not only candy, we can eat Japanese parfait at Gion Koish.
Episode 2 - 16:00
Kiyo cooked Oyakodon.
This is the Oyakodon recipe supervised by Ms. Nami Iijima, the food stylist of this drama.
Episode 2 - 18:05
Sumire served Japanese pepper to the table; it's Hararyokaku.
Japanese pepper goes well with Udon(うどん), Tendon(天丼), and Oyakodon(親子丼) too.
Hisago (ひさご)is my recommendation for Oyakodon.
Episode 2 - 23:40
Kiyo made ONIGIRI (=Omusubi)(おにぎり), rice ball.
A convenience store sells good Onigiri; I like it.
But please try Onigiri restaurants where we can order our favorite ingredients and eat hot and fresh Onigiri with Miso soup.
Episode 2 - 25:30
Kiyo visited Atago Shrine (愛宕神社) to get the amulet for precautions against fire.
Every year, tens of thousands of worshipers climb up to the shrine.
If you visit the shrine from the night of July 31st to the early morning of August 1st, you will be blessed with a thousand days' worth of fire protection.
Ms. Nana Mori, Kiyo's actress, climbed to the Atago Shrine in her free time. She tried to understand the Makanai and reflect on her acting.
Episode 2 - 29:00
Kiyo opened the BENTO box (弁当箱) on the way to the Atago Shrine.
You can get Japanese BENTO boxes at BENTO & CO in Kyoto.
Episode 2 - 31:20
Azusa hand sew Kappogi(=coverall apron)(割烹着) for Kiyo.
I don't have a specific shop for Kappogi in my mind; it will be updated.
→→→ SOU SOU is a good shop to find Kappogi
Episode 2 - 32:10
Kiyo started running to the house excitedly because she could safely return from the pilgrim walk.
YouTube live camera from the same angle.
We can check how Gion is crowded.
I would not list where not for tourists.
