AJS インターン企画「AJS Netflix Party & Discussion」実施報告
8月30日、日本とアメリカ両国から参加者を募り、オンライン上でのディスカッションセッションを開催しました。1998年公開のアメリカ映画『トゥルーマン・ショー』を鑑賞し、リアリティーショーの在り方やメディア媒体の信憑性について参加者は意見を交わすという企画です。この記事では、その様子についてレポートします。
On August 30, a virtual film and discussion session was held welcoming participants from both Japan and the United States. After watching the all-time classic hit ‘The Truman Show’, participants exchanged views on 1) how reality shows should be interpreted and 2) the credibility of media platforms. This article reports on the session in details.

インターン企画「AJS Netflix Party & Discussion」

1. 開催に至った経緯/ Event Background
日米協会は日米の民間交流促進を目的としています。世界に蔓延するコロナウィルスの影響で様々な側面で直接人と接する機会が減ってきてしまっているこのような状況下だからこそ、オンライン会議を用いることで、それを達成できるのではないかと考えたのが発端でした。
年齢の近いアメリカ人と日本人で交流し議論をする場を作るためには、何を題材にしようか、と考えたときに、おうち時間の定番となっていた「映画」を扱うことになりました。離れていても一緒に映画をみて楽しみ、その映画について語り合う場があったらいいのではないかというアイデアからこの企画は立ち上がりました。
The America Japan Society aims to promote educational/cultural interchange along with human and intellectual exchange between the US and Japan. Recently, limiting face-to-face interactions has become the norm to counter the COVID-19 outbreak. Taking the status quo into account, we have decided to host the ‘AJS Netflix Party & Discussion as a means to inherit the society’s mission via virtual communication platforms.
2. 開催レポート／Report
イベントにはアメリカ人、日本人計16名が参加しました。映画「トゥルーマン・ショー」をNetflix Partyを用いて全員で同時再生をして視聴しました。本作品は、主人公トゥルーマン・バーバンクの人生が本人の知らぬ間に24時間密着され、リアリティ番組『トゥルーマン・ショー』として放送されているというストーリである。映画を観終わった後、参加者はリアリティショーのあり方やSNSにおける誹謗中傷、メディア媒体の信憑性をテーマに議論を交わしました。
A total of 16 participants joined this event, with 2 people from the US and 14 Japanese students. We watched a movie "The Truman Show" together at the same time. The film features Truman Burbank, an ordinary man who unbeknownst to him, lives in a large studio populated by actors for a reality show called“ The Truman Show.” Participants had a fruitful discussion, examining the movie and related social issues from various perspectives, namely the ethics of reality programs, defamation, fake news, or one’s privacy. After watching the classic film ‘Truman Show’ on Netflix Party, participants conferred about societal conflicts including topics on how reality shows should be interpreted, defamation, and the credibility of the medium.
Q1. リアリティショーのあり方 / Ethics of Reality Shows
現代において、様々なリアリティショーは若者の間で大変人気ですが、しばしば問題が起きているのも事実です。リアリティショーの中には、SNS上でその出演者に対する目も当てられないような誹謗中傷が散見されることもあり、実際に人々からの批判が自殺の原因の一部となり、死人が出てしまうというケースも国内外問わず多くあります。なぜ人々はリアリティショーを面白いと思うのか、視聴者はリアリティショーをどういった姿勢で見るべきかといった点に焦点が置かれました。人は人生1度きりで、自らの人生しか体験することはできないが、リアリティショーを通して他者のリアルを覗くことで、自分にはない経験をいわゆる疑似体験したり、比較したりすることに面白さを覚えるという意見がありました。またリアリティショーを見る姿勢について、テレビ番組として放送されている以上、視聴者は個人的な感情を出演者にSNSなどを通して、ぶつけたりすることはあってはならないし、やはり内容全てがリアルであるという幻想を捨てることも大事だという結論に落ち着きました。
Reality programs have been very popular especially among young viewers, however, unfortunately, these shows are indeed often problematic. There are many controversial cases in which the casts undergo severe defamation on social media. As the ‘Truman Show’ sheds a spotlight on the ethics of reality shows, the discussion session focused on why people are enthusiastic about reality programs and how the contents should be interpreted. There was a keen opinion that people are prone to be obsessed with such programs because they can virtually experience other’s lives and enjoy the process of comparing. Moreover, the discussion concluded that viewers should never vent personal emotions against the casts via SNS and acknowledge that not every content is ‘real.’
Q2. メディア媒体の信憑性 / Credibility of Media
続いてメディア媒体の信憑性について参加者は議論を交わしました。新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大や米国大統領選などを巡り、フェイクニュースが近日特に問題視されるようになっています。私達は受け手として、どれだけ情報を鵜呑みにしていいのか、またどのように判断基準を設けるべきかといった点に着目しました。メディアの議題に付随して、言論の自由との境界線やメディアを介するプライバシー権保護などに議論が発展しました。
Subsequently, participants conversed about the credibility of the medium. In response to the heightened spread of the coronavirus infection and the US presidency election, issues of fake news have been catching national spotlights. The discussion focused on the following points. First, to what extent recipients accept information from media platforms to be true? Second, what should be the judgement criteria when reading information shared via the media? Participants also exchanged thoughts on the border line between the freedom of speech and defamation, or protection of individual’s privacy throughout media platforms.

英語でメディアについて様々なトピックを議論できたため、良い機会となったと同時に、楽しめた。
This was a very valuable and enjoyable opportunity to discuss various topics encompassing media in English.

私は映画を見て、議論をするのが大好きなので、とても素晴らしい企画だった。是非オンラインではなく一緒に映画を見られたらいうれしい。しかし議論をする上でトゥルーマンショーを見る必要はなかったと感じたため、より議論に密接に関係している映画だとなお良かったかもしれない。
This was a wonderful session because I cherish exchanging thoughts after watching movies. It would be great if we could watch a movie together in person. However, I could not see the necessity to watch the ‘Truman Show’ for the discussion, thus it might have been better if the movie was further relevant to the agenda.
4.まとめ・展望 / Conclusion
比較的若い世代を対象としたこの企画では年齢層が限られていたため、あまり堅い雰囲気にならず、自由かつ活発に議論ができた良い企画になったのではないかと思います。一方で、オンラインで映画を同時に視聴するなど、初めての試みということもあり、今後さらに改善すべき点もみつかりました。この企画を通して学んだことを糧に、より良い企画の考案及び日米交流の促進に引き続き努めていけたらと思います。
The event targeted a comparatively younger generation and the participants were ranged in similar age groups, hence we feel that it allowed a more free and stimulating discussion. On the other hand, as it can be indicated from the participant’s reflections, there is room for improvement, considering that it was the first attempt to host a virtual round table watching a film simultaneously. We are looking forward to making use of the feedback and continuing to pursue activities for US-Japan exchange.
