While absentmindedly looking at the weather radar and zooming in on a remote island, I discovered that the Ogasawara Islands in Tokyo are named after family relations. While I had heard of Chichijima (Father Island) and Hahajima (Mother Island) before, I couldn't help but laugh.

I wondered if they couldn't come up with more meaningful and unique names. Upon researching, I found out that these islands were actually discovered and named by the Ogasawara Expedition, led by Ina Tadayasu, dispatched by the Edo Shogunate in 1675.

Chichijima (Father Island) and Anijima (Brother Island) are adjacent, as well as Hahajima (Mother Island), Anejima (Sister Island), and Imoutojima (Younger Sister Island). However, Mukojima (Son-in-law Island), Yomejima (Daughter-in-law Island), and Nakoudojima (Matchmaker Island) are located somewhat far apart, which is quite interesting.
