アメリカ・テキサス州のヒューストンにある気候テック企業「Solugen」は砂糖を使ってバイオベース製品の開発をしています。
2016年に創業したSolugenはトウモロコシのコーンシロップで洗剤やプラスチックなどの化学物質を生み出すことに成功しました。Solugenによると化石燃料を原料とする場合は、原料に対し40％が廃棄物などになっていたが、Solugenの方法ならロスは10％にまで削減することが出来て、化石燃料と比べて低コストでの製造が可能です。また100%風力発電で稼働する同社の工場は火力発電よりも10倍効率的だといいます。

生産されたすべての材料は、再加工もできる。カーボンニュートラルな化学物質が生み出されていくと、脱化石燃料の勢いはより一層強まるだろう。
