The French live for their summer vacation. Many prefer to head to the beaches in July, and the rest prefer to head to the coast in August. 

Even COVID-19 cannot alter the trend in France. The government has organized for people to receive their second vaccination in a different location from where they received their first jabs. French people take their summer vacation very seriously. 

This means that foreign tourists visiting Paris for the summer will find a ghost town. Restaurants and cafes may be shut, and motorways may be jammed with traffic as people head out of the city and towards the sea. 

Michelin star chef Cyril Choisne, who runs Eclipses in Paris, closes his restaurant during the first two weeks of August. He gets so few customers that it’s not worth staying open during those weeks. Tourists in Paris should be aware that many facilities may not be open in August. 

Since 1936, when the French governmet first agreed to a two-week paid holiday for all French workers, people have been heading to the beach. Before that time, beach resorts were the playground of the rich. 

Relaxing and playing in the sun is considered to be a human right by French workers.

COVID-19 には止められないフランスの夏休み
フランス人は夏のバカンスを楽しみにしています。多くの人は7月にビーチへ行き、残りの人は8月に海岸へ行くことを好みます。

COVID-19をもってしても、このフランスのトレンドを変えることはできない。政府は、2回目の予防接種を、1回目の予防接種を受けた場所とは別の場所で受けるように取り計らっています。フランス人は夏のバカンスをとても大切にしています。

つまり、夏にパリを訪れる外国人観光客は、ゴーストタウンを目の当たりにすることになるのです。レストランやカフェが閉まっていたり、高速道路は人々がパリから海に向かっているので渋滞します。

パリで「Eclipses」を経営するミシュランの星付きシェフ、Cyril Choisneは、8月の最初の2週間はレストランを閉鎖します。お客さんが少なすぎて、この時期に営業する意味がないからです。パリを訪れる観光客は、8月に営業していない施設が多いことに注意してください。

1936年にフランス政府が、フランス人労働者全員に2週間の有給休暇を与えることに初めて合意して以来、人々はビーチに向かうようになりました。それ以前は、ビーチリゾートはお金持ちの遊び場でした。
