韓国の東亜日報、「変化にとても嬉しい」(I am delighted by the transformation of Dong-A Ilbo)

 私は2024年5月、ここのノートで韓国東亜日報の変化が必要だと主張した。 保守新聞としての役割に汲々とし、尹錫悦（韓国政府）の失政を批判できない点が残念であり、保守新聞の代表は朝鮮日報と烙印されている状況で、東亜日報の位置が曖昧であることを強調した。
しかも、過去の東亜日報は、伝統的な野党紙として独裁と軍部勢力と戦った経験もあったからだ。
日本の朝日新聞、米国のニューヨークタイムズのような役割を韓国の東亜日報は果たすべきだと考えた。 そうしてこそ、朝鮮日報に遅れを取っている東亜日報が成長できるという考えだった。
今、尹錫烈（ユン·ソクヨル）政府が戒厳令を発動して弾劾される状況で、東亜日報は完全に変化した。 現政権の失政を果敢に報道している。 とても嬉しくて支持する。
弾劾事態後、政権が力を失って態勢を転換したのではないかという疑いがあるかもしれないが、私は違う見方をする。 弾劾や戒厳令の前にも、東亜日報の論調が徐々に変化していた。
まるで「5月の私の記事」を見たかのように、東亜日報の経営陣も私と同じ考えをしたようだ。 東亜（トンア）日報は徐々に「尹錫悦」政府に対する批判を高めていった。 そして今は完全に野党紙になったような感じだ。
同じ保守新聞である朝鮮（チョソン）日報と中央（チュンアン）日報も、尹政権の批判的な記事が増えた。 しかし、東亜日報のような変化ではない。 朝鮮（チョソン）日報と中央（チュンアン）日報は、かつての朴槿恵（パク·クンヘ）政府の時と同じ「品揃え」の感じが強い。
反面、東亜日報は変化が感じられる。 今回がチャンスになり得る。
尹錫悦、政府の失政を果敢に報道し、進歩言論の代表走者になろうとする試みは、決して東亜日報としては悪い選択ではないだろう。
これまで韓国社会の大手新聞社はすべて保守新聞だった。 かなり民主主義が発展した韓国であるにもかかわらず、バランスが取れていなかった。 しかし、今回の戒厳令を契機に良い機会になりうる。 政治に関心のなかった多くの若い世代、特に20~30代の女性たちが進歩を支持するようになった。 今後の読者が確実に見える状況で、東亜日報がマスコミとしての役割とともに、諦められない新聞の影響力も同時に握ることができる機会でもある。
放送は過去MBCが保守に行って公正性、事業性をすべて失った経験から、一歩遅れて気を取り直してユン·ソクヨル政権のどんな外圧が来ても進歩を捨てずに進歩放送として役割を十分に果たしている。 そのためか、放送の信頼性、事業性ともに大きく回復した。
これからは新聞社でも大型の進歩新聞が誕生しなければならない。 過去の栄光を復活させる東亜日報の姿を期待する。（Qの希望）

In May 2024, I argued here that Dong-A Ilbo needed a transformation. It was disheartening to see that the newspaper, as a conservative outlet, could not adequately criticize the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's missteps. In a situation where Chosun Ilbo is firmly recognized as the representative conservative newspaper, Dong-A Ilbo's position felt ambiguous.
Moreover, Dong-A Ilbo has a history of fighting against dictatorship and military regimes as a traditional opposition media outlet. I believed it should play a role similar to Japan's Asahi Shimbun or America's New York Times. Such a transformation could allow Dong-A Ilbo to grow and distinguish itself from Chosun Ilbo.
Now, with the Yoon Suk-yeol administration facing martial law and impeachment, Dong-A Ilbo has undergone a complete transformation. It is now boldly reporting the administration's failings without hesitation. This change is most welcome and deserves support.
While some may suspect that this shift was prompted by the administration's weakened power following the impeachment crisis, I see it differently. Even before the martial law and impeachment, Dong-A Ilbo's editorial stance was gradually changing. It seems the newspaper's leadership shared the same perspective I expressed back in May. Step by step, Dong-A Ilbo increased its criticism of the Yoon administration, and now it feels like a full-fledged opposition media outlet.
The other conservative newspapers, Chosun Ilbo and JoongAng Ilbo, have also increased their critical reporting of the Yoon government. However, their changes feel more like superficial efforts to maintain balance, akin to their behavior during the Park Geun-hye administration. In contrast, Dong-A Ilbo's transformation feels genuine and significant.
This could be a real opportunity for Dong-A Ilbo. Aiming to become the leading progressive newspaper by boldly reporting the Yoon administration's failings is not a bad choice for the paper.
For a long time, Korea's major newspapers have all been conservative. Despite Korea's well-advanced democracy, there has been a lack of balance in the media landscape. However, this martial law crisis could serve as a turning point. Many younger Koreans, particularly women in their 20s and 30s, are now increasingly supporting progressive causes. In this clear trend of future readership, Dong-A Ilbo has the opportunity to fulfill its journalistic role while maintaining its influence as a major newspaper.
In broadcasting, In the past, MBC shifted toward conservatism but lost both credibility and business viability, only to recover significantly by firmly maintaining its progressive stance despite any external pressure from the Yoon administration. As a result, MBC has regained both trust and business success.
Now it is time for a major progressive newspaper to emerge. I hope to see Dong-A Ilbo revive its former glory and rise as a leading progressive voice in Korea.(Q's hope)
