Japan’s Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishery Exports Hit Record ¥1.5 Trillion (Approx. $9.72 Billion) in 2024

Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries announced that the country’s food and agricultural exports reached ¥1.5073 trillion (approx. $9.72 billion) in 2024, marking a 3.7% increase from the previous year and setting a record high for the 12th consecutive year. Strong exports to the U.S. and Europe contributed to Japan surpassing the ¥1.5 trillion ($9.72 billion) threshold for the first time. However, exports to China dropped by 29.1% year-on-year to ¥168.1 billion ($1.08 billion) due to the continued ban on Japanese seafood following the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

By product category, curry roux and mixed seasonings saw the largest increase, rising 15.9% to ¥62.99 billion ($4.06 billion), driven by strong demand in the U.S. and South Korea. Green tea exports surged 24.6% to ¥36.38 billion ($2.35 billion), benefiting from growing health-consciousness in Western markets. Wagyu beef also recorded a 12.1% increase.

The Japanese government aims to expand agricultural exports to ¥2 trillion ($12.9 billion) by 2025 and ¥5 trillion ($32.26 billion) by 2030. Minister of Agriculture, Takashi Eto, cautioned that the weak yen should not be the sole basis for optimism, emphasizing the importance of securing new markets and adapting production to match international demand. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to pushing for the resumption of exports to China and achieving the ¥2 trillion ($12.9 billion) target.
