五年目の大学シーズンは、University of DenverからMissouri State Universityに編入して1セメスター分だけの奨学金をもらい、新しいチームで過ごしました。五年目のシーズンは、コロナの影響で二年生時のシーズンが短くなり春に行われたので、その代償としてNCAAが可能にしてくれたものです。

Missouri State Universityは、サッカーチームのメンバーが9割留学生で構成されていました。コーチ陣も含め、イングランド人がとても多く、次にスペイン人、イタリア人、そして自分も含め他の国が少しづつ、といった構成でした。デンバー大学の比べると、練習と選手の質はとても高かったです。様々な国から人が集まるアメリカと、様々な国の人がプレーするサッカーはやはりいいなと感じていました。

プレー時間とパフォーマンスはとても満足できるものではありませんでしたし、デンバー大学入学時からの究極の目標であったドラフトにもかからず、落ち込みたい気持ちももちろんあります。しかし振り返ってみると、目標を持って過ごせた大学生活の中で、何より人として成長したと実感できることがたくさんあります。そしてそれも周りの支えのおかげであり、こうして振り返るたびに、自分だけで成し遂げたことではないと痛感しています。誰にでもできるわけではない経験をさせてくれたZero-Zeroと家族にはとても感謝しています。ありがとうございました。

これからのことは正直何もわかりませんが、ここで立ち止まってしまうと、挫折感に飲み込まれてなにもできなくなってしまう気がするので、これからも前に進み続けるために行動あるのみです。結局、フィールドでも同じですが、その瞬間瞬間で何をするかが全てであり、明日の心配や昨日の後悔に何も意味と思っています。

Hello, this is Kengo Ohira. It has been a while since my last blog post.

For my fifth college season, I transferred from the University of Denver to the Missouri State University, where I received a one-semester scholarship to play. My fifth year eligibility was made possible by the NCAA as a compensation for the 2020 season being shortened and held in the spring due to Coronavirus pandemic.

Missouri State University Men’s Soccer program had a roster that consisted of 90% international students. Many were English including the coaching staff, followed by Spanish players, Italians, and a little bit of other nationalities like myself. Compared to the University of Denver, the quality of the players and trainings and players was quite high. The players came from many different countries to the U.S. and played the one sport together. I grew appreciation for both the U.S. as a country and the game of football even more while my time here.

With that said, to be frank, I was disappointed with my minutes and performance. And, I could also be saddened over the fact that I did not get drafted, which had been my ultimate goal since I entered the University of Denver. However, looking back on my college life, I see much growth in myself as a person by spending it with a clear goal in mind. And it is thanks to the support of those around me that I have been able to do this, and every time I reflect, I realize that I did not accomplish this on my own. I am very grateful to Zero-Zero and my family for providing me with an experience that many would kill to have. You have my eternal gratitude.

In all honesty, I don’t have a clue about my future, but I do know that I will be consumed by a sense of failure and won't be able to do anything if I stop here. All there is to take is a next action to keep moving forward. In the end, just as is the case on the field, it is all about what you do at the very moment, and worrying about the future or regretting the past will only drag you down.
