Life is Beautiful ④: the story of Lukas, a German boy

There were soldiers holding guns and people screaming everywhere. We ran to hide behind a wooden crate stacked against the wall.

"We have to get out of here!" I called out amidst the chaos, "It's too dangerous!"

"No! This is such a great opportunity to find out stuff! We can't just go back when we've come this far!" Adolf yelled back, eyes shining with determination.

"Fine, you win. But we're just staying for ten minutes. Ten minutes and we're out of here." I replied after some hesitation.

"Got it."

"So, what's the plan?"

"Let's go over there and check to get a closer look," Adolf said, pointing to the metal box he was hiding in just this morning.

"Okay. One... two... THREE! GO! GO! GO!"

We dashed toward the box. I tripped over something, realizing in horror that it was a bloody body.

"Adolf! There are dead people on the ground! WHAT IS GOING ON?"

"Some kind of fight. But I don't know why they are fighting..."

Then I heard someone sneeze real close by.

"Eh? Did you just sneeze, Lukas?"

"No, I think the sound came from this box."

We peeked inside the small opening. Inside was the strange boy we met at lunch, who wouldn't speak.

"Shhh. Don't tell them that I'm here. I'm going to win the tank!"

We couldn't understand a single word the boy said, but he seemed to be hiding, so we let him be.

"Can't we go back to our rooms now? I think we've seen enough. I'm tired," I whined.

Honestly, I was too petrified to stay any longer.

"Just one more minute and we'll..."

"HEY JEW! Keep walking!"

We turned our gaze to where the voice was coming from. A soldier was pointing a gun to the back of a man who looked vaguely familiar...

"It's the crazy waiter, Mr. Jew!" said Adolf, "Hey! He winked at us! And look! He's walking funny. I wonder where he's going... Let's follow him."

"Are you out of your MIND? That soldier has a gun in his hand! What if he shoots us?"

"It's okay. We're only kids. Come on, before we lose sight of them."

I reluctantly followed Adolf, only because I was afraid to be left alone in this bloodshed.
