今日は研究日です。
みなさんは大学教員に研究日があるというのをご存知でしょうか？私も大学教員になってはじめてその存在を知りました。赴任する前に事務局からいろいろ聞かれるのですがその中の質問の中に「先生は研究日をいつにされますか？」という項目があるのです。「研究日？？」その時の私にはまったくわからないので、事務局の人にいろいろ聞いてしまいました。
簡単に言えば研究に集中する日ということみたいです。しかし、具体的に何かしなさいという指示はありません。要は研究を目的にしていたら何をしていても、どこにいてもいいそうです。ただ、曜日を設定しないといけないということだったので、「いつがいいですか？」と事務局のの人に聞いたら「できれば月曜日以外でお願いします。」と言われました。教員になってからしばらくしてからその理由がわかったのですが、大学は月曜日が祝日でも授業しなければならないことが影響しているようです。今大学は文部科学省から規定の授業数を実施しなさいと厳に命じられています。ところが月曜日を研究日に設定すると世間で同じように連休が取れるようです。そんなことも知らずに私は金曜日に設定してしまいましたので、月曜日の祝日は、ばっちり授業をすることになってしまいました。（学生も授業なのでかわいそうだなと思いますけど。）
ちなみに大学教員は労働裁量制です。（https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/裁量労働制 出典: フリー百科事典『ウィキペディア（Wikipedia）』）そのため、自分の意志で自由に働くことができます。つまり、ちょっとしか仕事をしなくてもたくさん仕事をしても給料は一緒なのです。その影響かどうかわかりませんが、なるべく仕事を減らそうとしている教員が多いように感じています。私は週末を含めほぼ毎日朝から晩まで研究室にいますので、誰がどれぐらい大学に来られているか何となく把握できます。最近は教職員の駐車場に止まっている車を見て、誰が来ているかわかるようになってきました。（ワーカーホリックですよね。）研究室に長時間いるから仕事していることになるとは思いませんが、他の教員はどこで何をしているのだろうと気になりますね。（といっても最近は以前ほどの関心はありませんが…。）
最近わかってきたのですが、他の先生は研究日にいろいろなことをされてようです。その中で特に多いのが他大学の非常勤講師です。（ちなみに私は今他大学の非常勤講師はしてません。その理由を書くと愚痴になるのでやめておきます。）他の大学から頼まれて非常勤講師をされている人もおられるので何とも言えないですが、非常勤講師をすることによって収入が増えますので、本来の研究日としての使い方としていかがなものか疑問を持ってしまいます。
という私もこの記事を研究日に書いていますので、これが研究かとお叱りを受けそうですね。叱られるとすぐにフリーズしてしまうほど超ビビりなので、この記事を書き終えたらお叱りから逃げるために研究室に向かいます。

Simply put, it's a day to concentrate on research. However, there is no specific instruction to do anything. The point is, if it's for research, it doesn't matter what you do or where you are. However, I had to set the day of the week, so when I asked the staff at the office, "When is good for you?"he said, "Except Monday, if possible.". I found out the reason after I became a teacher for a while, but it seems to be because I have to attend classes even though Monday is a national holiday. Currently, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology strictly orders universities to conduct the specified number of classes. However, if Monday is set as a research day, teacher can have consecutive holidays in the same way. I set it for Friday without knowing that, so I have to have classes on Monday's holiday. (I feel sorry for the students because they have classes.)
By the way, university teachers have a work discretion system. In other words, the salary is the same whether you work a little or a lot. I don't know if it's because of that, but I feel that there are many teachers who try to reduce their work as much as possible. I'm in the lab almost every day, including weekends, so I can sort of figure out who is coming to the college and how long. Recently, I can see who is coming by looking at the cars parked in the teachers' parking lot. (Maybe I am a workaholic.) I don't think I work because I spend a lot of time in the lab, but I wonder where and what other teachers are doing. (But I'm not as interested as I used to be.)
I've come to understand recently that other teachers are doing various things on the research day. Most of them are part-time lecturers from other universities. (By the way, I am not a part-time lecturer at another university. If I write down the reason, I will complain, so I won't do it.) There are some people who work as part-time lecturers at other universities, so I can't say anything about it, but working as a part-time lecturer will increase your income, so I wonder how it would be used as an original research day.
I wrote this article on my research day, so I'm going to be scolded for this. I'm so scared that I freeze up as soon as I'm scolded, so I'll head to the lab to get away from the scolding when I finish this article.
