コンサルの現場（イギリス）で使う英語表現集

（最終更新日: 2023年8月4日）

ロンドンにてコンサルタントとして働く中でよく聞く・使うビジネス英語表現を以下のTwitter (X) のツリーにひたすら並べているのですが、結構溜まってきたのでこちらにまとめました（最終更新日時点で約150の表現がこちらの記事に含まれています）。ツリーでも引き続き追加していきますし、こちらも気が向いたときにアップデートします

コンサルタントとしてロンドンオフィスで働く中で、周りでよく聞く/自身もよく使うビジネス英語表現をツリー形式でぶら下げていきます。純ジャパ目線ということで、教科書で学ばないものが中心です

表現群としての構造化（e.g. 使う場面ごとにカテゴライズする）はしておらず、並ぶ順番にも特に意味はないのですが、noteに移すにあたり各表現ごとのフォーマットを少し変えています:

• 英語表現

  • 日本語訳

  • 類似表現（あれば）

  • 何かしらコメント（あれば）

  • 例文

以下は皆さんへのお願いです:

• 私は英語の専門家ではないので、本記事はあくまで私の個人的なメモだとお考え下さい。記載内容に間違い等あればDM等でご教示いただけると幸いです

Caveat

• 注意事項・但し書き

• Warning, caution, precaution

• 大体そうなんだけど注意点としては〜みたいなのはビジネスの世界ではよくあるので登場頻度は高い。動詞として使う人もいる。名詞なら可算名詞

• That's basically correct, but perhaps the only caveat here is that we are still waiting for the sign-off of the plan

In place

• （仕組みなど抽象的なものが）存在している、使える準備ができている

• Established, arranged, situated

• プラン、会議体/ガバナンス、ポリシーなどについてよく聞く

• Currently, there's no mechanism in place to ensure the overall progress of the program

Park

• 議論を中断させて置いておく

• Postpone, set aside, defer

• 今議論する必要がないしする材料もないのでとりあえずこのままにしときましょうか、という時の表現

• Apparently, the central team had no idea about the to-be IT state for our country, so we decided to park the discussion

Invite

• 会議通知

• カタカナ日本語だとインビテーションを略してインビとか言ったりするけど、観測範囲では普通invitationではなくてinviteと言う。可算名詞

• Could you update today's invite to 5:30 pm? Thanks!

Straightforward

• 簡単で分かりやすい

• Simple, easy, uncomplicated

• 何かの説明をする時とかに頻出。同じ文脈でself-explanatory（それ自体が説明してる）とかintuitive（UIとかが直感的である）とかもよく使う

• The process is very straightforward, so I won't walk you through each step, but let me know if you have any questions

Align someone with something /be(get) aligned on something with someone

• 〜に同意する、一致する

• Agree, come to an agreement, be on the same page

• 登場頻度高い

• We are not aligned on this approach, and we need to discuss it further

Clash

• ミーティングが被っている

• Conflict, double booked

• 他にも表現はあるがこれを一番よく気がする。名詞でも動詞でもいける。なお、ラップトップがクラッシュした、のクラッシュはcrash

• I cannot attend this due to a meeting clash

From one’s side

• 私の方からは〜

• From one's perspective, from one's viewpoint

• 日本語と同じ感じで使える

• "Anything else before we go?" "Nothing from my side. Thanks!"

As per

• （ガイダンスやインストラクションなどに）沿って

• According to, in accordance with

• 多分結構フォーマルな言葉。asなしでperだけで使う例も見る

• I filled out the form as per your instructions

Rather than

• 対照的な2つの事象について、xxではなくむしろyy

• Instead of, in place of, as an alternative to

• 頻出

• I wanted to say thank you to you over the phone rather than send a dry "thank you" email

Walk someone through something

• 何かを誰かにステップバイステップな感じで丁寧に説明する

• Talk you through, go through

• 頻出。スライドとかを説明するときも、Let me walk you through the slidesみたいな感じで使う

• Let me walk you through the process of making a Twitter account

Take something offline

• 別途話しましょう

• Discuss something separately

• 込み入った話である等の理由で「別途話しましょう」と言う時の定番。WFHで実際は全てオンラインでもオフラインと言う

• That's a good point, but it's specific to your situation only and may not be relevant to others, so let's take it offline

Otherwise

• 前に言われたことと反対、違う

• かなり広く使える非常に便利な言葉

• The following should answer all of your questions, but let me know if otherwise.

• It says we don't have to submit the report this week, but Andrew said otherwise. Could you please clarify?

Speaking of which

• それに関していうと…、ところで

• By the way, on that note

• whichはそれまでに出た何かを指してるが、何を指してるのか謎になってることが多いので別に考えなくていい。結果的にところで的な話題転換の意味になっている

• Speaking of which, how is your project going?

In a sense

• 〜という意味で

• In a way

• 形容詞をsenseの前につけたり、In what sense?と疑問文で使うこともある。頻出

• I agree with what you're saying, but in a sense, it oversimplifies the issue

Ping someone

• 声をかける

• Contact, message, reach out to someone

• Teamsとかのチャットで誰かに声をかけるときに使う

• Are you coming to the office later today? Just ping me when you are around. Let's catch up

Get back to someone

• 後で連絡する

• Respond to someone, reply to someone

• 今は答え出せないので出した上で連絡するというニュアンスがある。超頻出。とりあえず発言者側がボール持ってることが明確になるのでいい

• Regarding the date for the offsite meeting, let me check my calendar first and get back to you

Hammer out the details

• 詳細を詰める

• Work out, resolve, finalise

• The structure looks fine to me. I'll leave it to you to hammer out the details

From memory

• 覚えてる限りでは、記憶ベースでは

• From what I remember, as I recall

• 確信がそこまでない時に使う（参照先が記憶なので）。辞書で調べると、（詩などを）ノートとか見ないで記憶だけ頼りに（暗誦する）という意味しか載ってないけど、上記の意味でよく聞く

• From memory, Tom is on holiday until Friday

In the background

• 裏で

• Behind the scenes

• あなたが何かをやってる裏でこっちでもやっときますよ、裏ではこんなシステムが動いてますよ、とか日本語で言う時の「裏で」

• I can update the analysis using the latest data in the background while you are making a presentation

Happy to be challenged (on)

• （建設的な）批判受け入れます

• Let me know if you have any comments

• 最終的な意思決定者ではない人がドラフト段階の提案をした時とかに使われる感じ（これで行こう、でなく、これでどうでしょうか、的な）

• Hopefully, this will save us a bit of time tomorrow, but happy to be challenged on anything

Duck out

• （会議を）中抜けする、早く出る

• Leave, drop off

• Sorry, I need to duck out at around half-past ten as I have another appointment

At the moment

• 今の所

• For now, currently

• チャットとかだとatmと略されるのも見る。For nowでも大体同じだが、後者の方が範囲が広い感じらしい

• According to the central team, no action is required at the local level at the moment. They will contact us if there are any changes

Miss

• 見落とす

• Misunderstand, forget

• 普通の単語だが、「見落としあったら教えてください」とかいう時によく使う

• That sounds counter-intuitive. What am I missing?

Rather

• 結構

• Quite, somewhat, to some extent

• 程度を表す副詞としてよく形容詞の前に付くが、結局どの程度なのかがよくわからない謎の言葉

• It's rather cold today, isn't it?

Take

• 意見

• Opinion, view

• 基本所有格を前につけて使うと思う（my takeとか）

• “What's your take on the new proposal made by Rishi Sunak yesterday?” “My take is…”

Up to date

• 最新の状態である

• The latest

• 何らかの情報とかが最新であるって意味で普通に使うが、weとかを主語にとって、やらなきゃいけないこととかを全てやってて、オールオッケーな状態にあるって意味でも聞くことある気がする

• We need to keep the database up to date

Move on

• 次に進む

• Go forward

• ファシリテーションしてて次のトピックに進む時とかに使う。（前のトピックがひと段落つく）Moving forward, （次のトピック）という形で使われることが多い

• Okay, let's agree on the actions for next week before we move on to the next topic

At the end of day

• 結局のところ

• Ultimately

• ウザいビジネスジャーゴンとして挙げられることもあるけど、よく出てくるしよく使ってしまいがち

• Like I said, I don't think we should do that, at least for now, but at the end of the day, it's your call

High-level

• 抽象度が高い

• Abstract, vague, ambiguous

• 日本語だと技術水準が高い的な意味で使われるのが普通な気がするが、普通はこちらの抽象度が高いという意味。叙述・限定どちらでも使える。なお、ポジションが上（e.g. High-level officials)という意味もある

• The discussion was very high-level. Further discussion is needed

If you don’t mind me asking

• もし聞いてよければ

• プライベート関連など、相手が答えたくない可能性がある質問をする時につけとく。meじゃなくて文法的にはmyが正しいと中学で習った記憶があるが、meしか聞かない気がする

• You mentioned that you were on vacation. If you don't mind me asking, where did you go?

In an ideal world

• 理想/あるべきの世界においては

• Ideally, in a perfect situation, all things considered

• 現実はそうではないので〜という文言とセット

• In an ideal world, the central team would help us with this, but apparently that's not the case

As opposed to

• 対照的である、異なっている

• In contrast to, in comparison with

• 特段ビジネス用語ではないけど、xx（当初の想定など）と対照的である、異なってるという意味で頻出

• Are you saying that we have to update all the data manually as opposed to the original guidance? I don’t think we have capacity for that

Pre-read

• 前もって読むべき資料

• Please read this beforehand/in advanceでも別にいいですが。動詞でも名詞でも使う

• He forwarded a document to me as a pre-read for the meeting on Friday

Last minute

• 約束の時間・会議などの直前、ギリギリで

• At the eleventh hour, just before the deadline, at the final moment

• 日常会話でも頻出

• Apologies for this last-minute request, but for tomorrow's deck, could you add one slide that summarizes yesterday's discussion, please?

Get/bring someone up to speed

• 誰かを最新情報に追いつかせる

• Update someone, get someone caught up

• 目的語には再帰代名詞も取れる。例えば1週間休暇で休んでいた同僚に何があったかをシェアするみたいな文脈とかでよく使われる

• Let me bring you up to speed with the latest developments before the meeting starts

In place

• （仕組みなど抽象的なものが）存在している、使える準備ができている

• Established, arranged, situated

• プラン、会議体/ガバナンス、ポリシーなどについてよく聞く

• Currently, there's no mechanism in place to ensure the overall progress of the program.

In hand

• （タスク・問題などが）対処されている

• Under control, being dealt with, being managed

• Are you talking about the deck for tomorrow's meeting? Don't worry, it's in hand. I will share the latest version right after this call

On one’s radar

• （マイルストン、タスクなどを）認識している

• Within one's awareness, being considered or monitored

• 残念ながら否定系で使われることが多い気がする

• Apologies, that task wasn't on my radar, to be honest. When is the deadline?

Workaround

• 回避策、その場しのぎの解決方法

• Solution, alternative method, workaround plan

• "The system is not working at the moment due to planned maintenance, so we need to find a workaround." "Can we just do it manually?"

Crack on

• すぐに始める

• Start, get on with it, proceed

• 会議始める時によく使う

• "Is Penny joining this call?" "Yes, but she said she might be a bit late. Let's crack on"

Iron out

• （課題や違いなどを）解決する、平準化する

• Resolve, smooth out, fix

• 物理的に何かをフラットにすると言う意味もある

• The government is still trying to iron out some problems with Brexit

As in

• 〜の意味で、言い換えると〜

• Like, for example, similar to

• As in…?だけでも質問として成立。ボヤッとしたこと言うとこれで返されることはそれなりにある

• "We are having a hard time with this project…" "As in...?" "Well, our manager is not doing his job. Our client made a formal complaint to the MD"

i.e.

• 言い換えれば

• That is, in other words, namely

• 書き言葉でも話し言葉でも普通にぶっ込まれてくる。話してる時はそのままアイイーと言う

• Given how we are going to run the presentation, i.e. one slide each, can I suggest...

Broadly

• だいたい、概ね

• Generally, overall, broadly speaking

• Noと言いたくないけどやんやり否定する時にも使える

• I think we are broadly on the same page, so I'm not too worried, but just wanted to check a couple of points...

(be) conscious

• 〜と思う、〜が気になっている

• Aware, mindful, cognizant

• 話し言葉でもメールとかでもよく主語もbe動詞も抜いて使われる

• I haven't reviewed it yet, as I'm conscious it still needs updating from your end

Back to back

• 連続して（ミーティングが続く）

• Successive, consecutive, one after the other

• 別にミーティングに限った表現ではないが、複数のミーティングが切れ目なくスケジュールに入ってて息をつく暇もありませんという感じ

• Apologies for not getting back to you earlier - I had three meetings back to back

Following up on

• 〜を受けて、前述の情報に基づいて

• Regarding, with regard to

• これ自体は特に何も言ってない言葉なので別に使わなくても何も困らない

• Following up on my email below/our call earlier this week...

Moving forward/going forward

• 以降は、これからは

• In the future, henceforth, from now on

• 実際何も言ってないが、なんとなく動いてる感があるので多用されている。少しうざい感じがする表現かもしれない

• Let's adopt this approach going forward

Binary

• ゼロイチ

• Black or white, clear-cut

• 0か1かの2進数で表現されるデータのことだけど、白黒付けられる問題じゃない、とかいう時にも比喩的に使える（日本語でもゼロイチの世界じゃない的なことを言う）

• "Does that mean they are always right?" "It's not as binary as that."

Layman

• 専門知識がない素人

• Non-expert, amateur, novice

• In layman’s termsという成句で、素人にもわかるような言葉で、という意味になり、これで使われることが多い。ポリコレ的にはlaypersonの方がいいという説もある

• As a layman, I struggled to follow the conversation

Cross-reference

• 2つのリストを照合する

• Check against, refer to

• エクセルとかの話だと普通にvlookupといっても当然伝わる

• We use index match rather than VLOOKUP to cross-reference two lists

Dictate

• 規定する

• Decide, mandate

• Dictationとかdictatorのdictateだが、後者の意味の方。ルールとかロジック的に主語が目的語のあるべき姿を規定しますよね、とかいう文脈で使える

• The laws of the relevant jurisdiction will dictate the process of legally merging local entities

Juggle

• 複数の仕事等をどうにか上手く回す

• Manage, handle

• ジャグリングのジャグル、ミーティングの時間調整してる時にも見る

• I always wonder how you juggle a baby and a career. I may be able to juggle some meetings if we are limited on time slots

Reiterate

• (念押しの為)もう一度言う

• Repeat, reaffirm, restate

• 単に前言ったことを繰り返すと「それさっきも言ってたよ」となるので、これを使うことでメタ的に繰り返しをエクスキューズして感がある

• Before we go, let me reiterate that the deadline for the report is COP Friday. Let us know in case you have any questions

In situ

• 元々の場所にある、あるべき場所にある

• In place, in position, in situational

• ラテン語から来てる

• We need a new manager in situ sooner rather than later

Critique

• ドキュメント等をレビューして磨き込むという意味で使う

• Review, analyse, assess

• 文芸作品とかの批評みたいな意味もある。Criticiseとは違う言葉

• They are sending the document shortly, so let's critique it later today

Take the piss

• 調子に乗って舐めた態度でバカにしてくる、ふざけてる

• Tease, mock, make fun of

• かなりフランク、普通ビジネスの場で使う表現ではないが例文みたいな形だとあり得る

• "And they said the deadline was 15 August…" "That's taking the piss! We only have three days!"

Buy-in

• プラン等に対する承認、賛同、サポートの表明

• Agreement, approval

• オフィシャルなサインオフというよりはインフォーマルなものについて使われると思う。不可算名詞

• We've got buy-in from board members. We are ready to share the proposal with the wider group

Salient

• 一番重要、目を引く

• Significant, notable, important

• 何かleap out（飛び出てる）してるような様子を指すところから来てる。後にpointsとかfeaturesとかがつくことが多い。なんか頭良さそうな感じすると思う

• Here's a summary of the salient points from the article:

Big-ticket item

• でかい論点、仕事の塊

• Big chunk of work

• 辞書的には車とか家とかの高価な買い物を指すらしいが、仕事の塊といった意味でも使われると思う

• There are some big-ticket items that we still need to deep-dive further into

Set the scene

• 前提となっている状況を説明する（そしてその状況から議論なりをスタートする）

• Provide context, introduce, establish the background

• 説明したその状況から何らかのdevelopmentが期待されている。前提説明の一枚紙とかをa scene setterとか言ったりする

• In this regard, I have attached a one-pager just as a scene setter

Sticking point

• 交渉等においてお互いが妥協できないポイント

• Obstacle, barrier

• One of the main sticking points in the post-Brexit trade talks is fishing rights

et al.

• そのほかの皆さん

• And others

• ラテン語のet aliaから来てて、英語にそのまま訳すとand others。論文とかで見るやつ。メールの宛名とかでこれを書く人がたまにいる

• Pete et al, (以下メール本文)

Segue

• いい前振り、滑らかな転換

• Transition, shift

• ファシリテーションしてる際、誰かが言ったことがそのまま次のトピックに繋がる時とかに使う。セグエではなく、セグウェイと発音する。可算名詞

• Thank you for raising that point, Lisa. Actually, that's a good segue into the next topic, which is…

Regroup

• 会議などを一度中断した後に再集合すること

• Reassemble, reorganize, gather again

• We are running out of time for this topic. Can we regroup later, let's say at 1 pm?

Cascade down

• 情報をパスすること

• Pass down, trickle down, flow down

• ヒエラルキーの上から下に流すというニュアンスがある

• The directors will be notified of the decision, and they will cascade it down to their teams accordingly

Shed light on something

• もっと情報を提供する

• Clarify, explain

• 何かに関するやり方とかの具体的な話から、もっと抽象度が高い話まで広く使えると思う

• Could you please shed light on the performance review process?

Half + 時

• XX時半(30分)

• Half past threeとかで3時半という意味になるのは中学英語の範疇だが、half threeのようにイギリスだとpastを省略して言うことが多い。half以外（tenとか）でpastを省略するパターンはないと思う。分+before/past+時のパターンは意外と頻繁に聞く印象がある

• The meeting is at half two, so we have some time before it starts

One-size-fits-all

• 全ての状況でうまく行く（方法など）

• Versatile, general-purpose

• 否定文で使われることが多い（それぞれの状況に適した、個別のやり方を適用すべきである、という意味になる）

• I don't think a one-size-fits-all approach would work. The situation varies from country to country

I hear what you are saying

• あなたが言ってること、わかります

• I understand, I get it, I see where you're coming from

• 「言ってることはわかります」が直訳だけど、そのあとにbutが続いて、「あなたの言ってることのロジックとかは理解できるけど、同意はしません」という文脈でよく使われる

• I hear what you're saying, but I still think we should go with the original plan

Feed data into something

• データを（システムなどに）食わせる

• Input data, enter data, provide data for

• 英語でも日本語でも同じ意味の動詞が使われてるパターン

• Customer data is automatically fed into the system, so no need to manually input it

Either-or

• 二者択一の（状況など）

• Either A or Bで、AかBのどちらかという意味になるが、そこからの派生

• It's an either-or situation. We can choose to focus on either cost reduction or process improvement

In due course

• 将来の適切なタイミングで、そのうち

• Eventually, at the appropriate time

• 丁寧な感じがする表現な気がする

• Thank you for submitting your proposal. We will review it and get back to you in due course

How’s life?

• 最近どう？

• How are you doing, how are things, what's going on with you?

• 会話の糸口がない時に使う。How are you?の後に何も思い浮かばなかったらいきなりこれに入ることもあるし、何か話が終わって会話が途切れた時とかにも使う

• Hey, how's life?

Day job

• 組織の中で通常行ってる仕事/ジョブディスクリプション上の仕事

• Regular job, main occupation, primary work

• アドホックなプロジェクトとの対比で使われる。コンサルから見るとクライアントが自己紹介する時に聞くことが多くなる

• My day job is Head of Customer Experiences, and I've been working for this company for 10 years

Get/be bogged down

• 難しい事態にはまり込んで他のことができなくなる

• Get stuck, become mired, be overwhelmed with details

• 元々は濡れた地面とかにはまり込むことを指すがそれが比喩的に使われている

• I understand where you are coming from, but let's not get bogged down in details for now

Populate

• （データベースやテンプレートを）埋める、記入する

• Fill out, complete

• 人が住む的な意味（この場合受動態で使われることが多い）でも使われる

• They asked us to populate the template and share it back with them by EOD Friday

A catch-22 situation

• 矛盾した2つの条件の間で身動きが取れなくなる状況

• A dilemma, a no-win situation, a predicament

• 同名の有名な小説から来ている

• So I need a bank account to rent a flat, but how can I get a bank account without an address? That’s a classic catch-22 situation!

Flick

• スライド間を移動する

• Go to the next slide

• 何かを軽く弾いたりして動かすというのが基本の意味だが、ウェブ会議とかで投影してる際にスライド間を移動するという意味もある。フリック入力のフリック

• John, could you flick to the next slide please...? Oh, you've gone too far. Flick back...yes, there you go

Morning / afternoon / evening

• 挨拶

• Hello, hi

• 挨拶。教科書的にはgoodをつけるパターンがメインだと習うけど、肌感覚的にはつかないパターンの方を主に聞く。Morningは朝に送るメールでもよく使う（afternoonと eveningはメールではあまり使わない気がする）

• Morning Paul. You alright?

Quick question

• ちょっとした質問

• 大してquickでもなかったりする。実態としてはinterruptのためのexcuseとしての機能がメイン。I have a quick questionと言ってもいいし、チャットとかだと冠詞付けずそのまま書いたりする

• Just a quick question, when is the deadline for the report again?

Boil the ocean

• 達成不可能なタスクなどをやる/やろうとすること

• Attempt something impossible, tackle an impossibly large task

• I honestly don’t think we can do that. Let's not boil the ocean and focus on what we can do practically

Thinking

• 考え・アイディア

• Thoughts, ideas, reflections

• 当たり前にthinkの動名詞だが、考え・アイディアという意味で名詞的に使うこともある。一定まとまりがある・練られた思考内容に対して普通使うと思う

• So what's the thinking behind the decision to combine the two workstreams together?

Storm in a teacup

• しょうもないことで大騒ぎすること

• Fuss, big deal

• It sounds like a storm in a teacup to me, but can you have a quick call with him to better understand his concern?

Sounding board

• 壁打ちの相手、壁打ちのための会議

• Advisor, consultant, someone to bounce ideas off

• 一緒に考えようってニュアンスならbrainstormでOK

• How’s the prep work going for tomorrow? Happy to be your sounding board if needed

Daft

• バカな

• Silly, foolish, absurd

• ビジネスでは「バカな質問ですが…」という文脈くらいでしか使わないとは思う

• I know this is a daft question / I may be being daft here but…

Legwork

• やらないといけないけど楽しくない仕事

• データをひたすら入力するみたいな、やらないといけないけど楽しくない仕事。groundworkという言葉もあるけどこちらは単に準備のための仕事というニュアンスと思う。不可算名詞

• I have some capacity this week, so happy to do some legwork if needed

Have a go at something

• やってみる

• Try, attempt, give something a shot

• 完成版を作るわけじゃないけどとりあえずまずやってみますよ的な感じ

• Let me have a go at it first. I will share the draft later today for your review

Perfect storm

• 独立した個々の悪い事象が同時に起こり、そのコンビネーションにより悲惨になった状況

• Unfortunate combination of circumstances, a situation where everything goes wrong

• 過去形で使われることが多いか。可算名詞

• Last year was a perfect storm for us. We lost our biggest client, we had some compliance issues with the FCA, and the overall economy was bad

Living document

• 常に更新される文書

• Evolving document, constantly updated document

• インターナル向けのものであることがほとんどだと思う。Dynamic documentとも言うらしい。Wikipediaの記事とかが具体例

• Please consider this action log as a living document - it needs to be reviewed and updated regularly

As you see fit

• あなたが適してると思うやり方で（何かをやる）。（細かいところはあなたの責任のもと）あなたが適当だと思う形で（やってください）

• As you think best, as you deem appropriate, according to your judgment

• フォーマルな感じがする表現と思う

• You can adjust the frequency of the meetings as you see fit

Moving parts

• 変数、要因、問題要素

• Variables, components, elements, factors

• 意思決定などの際に変数が多くて困る、とか言う時の「変数」。本来はそれが何なのかを明確にしていくべきではある

• I know there are lots of moving parts, but at least we need to agree on the direction in this meeting

Go off on a tangent

• 関係ない話に逸れる

• Deviate, digress, veer off course, go off topic

• Apologies, I was going off on a tangent. Let's stick to the agenda points

Steer

• 指針、方向性に関するアドバイス

• Guide, direct, navigate

• 名詞でも動詞でも使うが、動詞だと正しい方向に導くと言う感じになる。名詞なら可算名詞として使える

• ”We need a steer from central on this topic” ”What do YOU want to do?”
