オーストラリア人が驚いた六本木ミッドタウンの○○○○とは？

Y氏：今こちらはとても寒いです。東京では1度くらいですね。外にはまだ出ていませんが、寒そうです。そちらはどうですか？
T氏：こちらは完全に真逆です！今オーストラリアは夏の盛りで、今日は34度、明日は37度とさらに暑くなります。すごいでしょう？
Y氏：明日、家族で軽井沢に行く予定です。車で3時間ほどかかる東京近郊のリゾート地です。一泊しますが、雪景色や温泉、そばを楽しむ予定です。軽井沢ってご存じですか？
T氏：軽井沢の名前は聞いたことがありますが、まだ行ったことはないです。でも話を聞いていると魅力的ですね！スキーなどはされますか？
Y氏：実はスキーやスノーボードはしないんです。ただ、雪の中で過ごす時間や景色を楽しむのが好きです。温泉に入って、地元の料理を味わうだけで満足です。
T氏：それもまた贅沢な楽しみ方ですね。オーストラリアでは、自然や景色を楽しむリゾートはどんな感じですか？
T氏：冬のリゾートはあまりないのですが、夏ならビーチリゾートがたくさんあります。ただ、温泉文化はないので、日本の温泉がとても羨ましいです。
Y氏：Tさんは以前、日本に滞在されていたと伺いましたが、どんな地域を訪れましたか？
T氏：去年の夏、日本を訪れました。一番暑い時期でしたね（笑）。神奈川の横浜や、箱根、鎌倉で過ごしました。観光地として有名な場所ばかりでしたが、次回はもっとローカルな地域も行きたいです。
Y氏：それは良いですね！箱根や鎌倉も素晴らしいですが、地方には隠れた魅力的な場所がたくさんあります。
T氏：そういえば、東京の六本木にも少し滞在しました。六本木ミッドタウンの地下のデパチカ（デパートの地下食品売り場）が印象的でした。カツサンドが本当に美味しかったです！
Y氏：デパチカは素晴らしいですよね。六本木も都会的で便利な場所ですし、ナイトライフも充実しています。カツサンドを覚えているなんて、日本の食文化に馴染んでいますね！
T氏：実は、10年前にオーストラリアのアデレードに住んだことがあります。そこでは英語を学びながら、オーストラリア大使館のための記事執筆をしていました。
Y氏：アデレードですか！教会の街として有名ですね。どんな経験でしたか？
T氏：本当に素晴らしい時間でした。オーストラリア大使館が費用を負担してくれたので、滞在費や食事に心配することなく、記事執筆に集中できました。当時はまだAIが普及していなかったので、すべて自力で書き上げました（笑）。
Y氏：それは貴重な経験ですね！今ではAIも発展していますが、やはり自分で書いた文章の達成感は特別です。
T氏：本当にそうです。そして、その経験があったからこそ、旅行や文化交流への興味が深まりました。
T氏：旅行と言えば、最近どこか面白い国に行きましたか？
Y氏：最近はインドを訪れました。食文化や歴史がとても豊かで興味深い国でした。ただ、衛生面で少し戸惑う部分もありましたね…。
T氏：確かに、インドは文化的に刺激的ですが、衛生や体調管理が課題になることも多いですね。
Y氏：そうなんです。地元の食事を楽しんでいたのですが、途中から体調を崩してしまいました。でも、現地の人々は本当に親切で、観光中もたくさんの人が話しかけてくれて楽しい時間を過ごせました。
T氏：ところで、ヨーロッパには行かれたことはありますか？
Y氏：はい、ロンドンを訪れました。街並みが美しく、建築や歴史に圧倒されましたね。ロンドンは写真好きの私にとって最高の都市でした。
T氏：ロンドンは確かに素晴らしいですね。特にバッキンガム宮殿やハイドパークのエリアは印象的です。
T氏：技術的な話ですが、昔の日本はテクノロジー分野で世界をリードしていましたよね。ソニーや任天堂などが特に印象に残っています。
Y氏：確かに80年代や90年代は日本が世界を牽引していました。しかし、最近は中国やアメリカに追い越されている印象です。
T氏：テスラのような革新的な企業は特にそうですね。
Y氏：私もテスラを所有していますが、車というよりソフトウェアそのもののように感じます。日本のメーカーもこの分野で追いついていってほしいです。

Y: It’s extremely cold here right now. In Tokyo, it’s about 1 degree Celsius. I haven’t been outside yet, but it looks freezing. How is it over there?
T: It’s the complete opposite here! It’s the height of summer in Australia. Today, it’s 34 degrees, and tomorrow it will be 37 degrees. Isn’t that wild?
Y: Tomorrow, my family and I are planning to visit Karuizawa. It’s a resort area about three hours from Tokyo by car. We’ll stay there for one night and enjoy snowy landscapes, hot springs, and soba noodles. Have you heard of Karuizawa?
T: I’ve heard the name before, but I’ve never been there. It sounds amazing! Do you ski there?
Y: Actually, we don’t ski or snowboard. We just enjoy spending time in the snow and taking in the beautiful scenery. Soaking in a hot spring and savoring the local cuisine is enough for us.
T: That sounds like a luxurious way to spend time. What are resorts like in Australia for enjoying nature or scenery?
T: We don’t really have winter resorts, but in summer, we have plenty of beach resorts. However, we don’t have a hot spring culture like Japan, and I really envy that.
Y: I heard you’ve stayed in Japan before. What areas did you visit?
T: I visited Japan last summer, during the hottest time of the year (laughs). I spent time in Yokohama, Hakone, and Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture. They were all well-known tourist destinations, but next time, I’d love to explore more local spots.
Y: That sounds great! Hakone and Kamakura are wonderful, but there are so many hidden gems in Japan’s countryside that are worth visiting.
T: Speaking of Tokyo, I also spent a bit of time in Roppongi. The depachika (department store food hall) at Roppongi Midtown really left an impression. The katsu-sando (pork cutlet sandwich) there was absolutely delicious!
Y: Depachika are incredible, aren’t they? Roppongi is an urban area with lots of conveniences, and its nightlife is vibrant. The fact that you remember the katsu-sando shows how well you’ve embraced Japanese food culture!
T: Actually, about ten years ago, I lived in Adelaide, Australia. While there, I worked on writing articles for the Australian Embassy while studying English.
Y: Adelaide! It’s famously known as the city of churches. What was your experience like?
T: It was an amazing time. The Australian Embassy covered all the expenses, so I didn’t have to worry about accommodation or food and could focus on writing. Back then, AI wasn’t as advanced as it is now, so I wrote everything manually (laughs).
Y: That sounds like a truly valuable experience! Even with AI tools today, the sense of accomplishment from writing something yourself is special.
T: I completely agree. That experience deepened my interest in travel and cultural exchange.
T: Speaking of travel, have you visited any interesting countries recently?
Y: Recently, I went to India. It’s a fascinating country with a rich food culture and history, but I did face some challenges with hygiene.
T: India is definitely culturally stimulating, but issues like hygiene and health management can be tricky.
Y: Exactly. While I enjoyed the local cuisine, I fell ill midway through the trip. Still, the locals were incredibly kind, and many people struck up conversations with me while sightseeing. I had a wonderful time overall.
T: By the way, have you been to Europe?
Y: Yes, I’ve visited London. The cityscape was stunning, and I was amazed by the architecture and history. As someone who loves photography, London was the perfect city for me.
T: London is truly incredible. Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, in particular, are so impressive.
T: On a different note, Japan used to lead the world in technology. Companies like Sony and Nintendo really stood out to me.
Y: That’s true. Japan dominated the global stage in the ’80s and ’90s. However, it feels like we’ve been overtaken by China and the United States in recent years.
T: Companies like Tesla really embody innovation these days.
Y: I actually own a Tesla, and it feels more like a piece of software than just a car. I hope Japanese manufacturers catch up in this area as well.
