What were problems of AFC Bournemouth against Tottenham Hotspur?

I analyzed this game very carefully and found many challenging points of AFC Bournemouth.

In these problems, I extracted three which high priority to improve.

Three tactical problems of AFC Bournemouth

Problem1:Wasn’t be able to deal with Hotspur ‘s Inverted Full-Back Role

Problem2:Couldn’t stick to the Defensive Principles

Problem3:Fewer Attacking patterns

Problem1:Wasn’t be able to deal with Hotspur ‘s Inverted Full-Back Role

In this game, Iraola aimed to pressing high line to win the ball and move to fast break attack.

Their initial pressing structure was below.

Unfortunately, when GK building up, Hotspur introduced Inverted Full-Back. Initial RSB Porro moved into inside and played as if he was CH. In this action, Hotspur could create positive space in their right area and succeeded to make Kluivert confuse.

Finally, Spurs made it to walk-through Bournemouth’s high pressing.

In order to solve this 1st problem, Bournemouth should introduce one-one defense or decide their role for Inverted Full-Back more clearly.

Problem2:Couldn’t stick to the Defensive Principles
When AFC Bournemouth conceded a 1st goal, there were 3 big problems.

Let's see when AFC Bournemouth conceded a 1st goal.

・1st one is when Bissouma possessed ball, Christie was so easy to allow him to forward.

・2nd one, when Bissouma passed to Sarr, Bournemouth CB Zabarnyi was watching only ball then he couldn’t catch Maddison.

Also, 3rd one, Not deal with opponent’s fast break attack.

When AFC Bournemouth attacking, their system shifted from 4-2-3-1to 2-1-6-1. So, when they lose possession, they don’t have any options to stop opponent’s counter attacking.

Especially, their weak zones are both sides of Rothwell and Behind of both their SBs.

Problem3:Fewer Attacking patterns

Yes, Iraola’s attacking principal is very aggressive and integrated direct attack and side attack.

His tactical characteristics is to put to use automatic patterns especially relationship of SB, SH.

Instead, if they can’t express their attacking patterns, suddenly they don’t have alternative way to score goal.

In order to solve this situation, I suggest they should introduce frontal breakthrough.

They have Solanke who will be a good post player. I hope they should play as if Tottenham Hotspur’s frontal breakthrough such as first scoring.

Sakarinyo Eyes

I know next opponent Brentford will be definitely difficult but if they can improve their problems which I analyzed in this report, I’m sure they will get bright future.
