What is Tachibana?
Tachibana is a native Japanese citrus tree officially known as Yamato Tachibana. Unlike most citrus trees that shed their leaves, the tachibana is an evergreen tree, maintaining its lush green foliage year-round. Its fruit turns a vibrant yellow during Shōsetsu’s last kō (the end of the “Minor Snow” period in the 72 micro-seasons of Japan), marking the season known as Tachibana Hajimete Kibamu.
Historically, the term “tachibana” referred to all citrus fruits in Japan. Its unchanging foliage has long made it a symbol of eternity and prosperity.
タチバナとは？
橘とは、日本固有の柑橘類で、「ヤマトタチバナ」として知られています。多くの柑橘類が葉を落とすのに対し、橘は常緑樹であり、一年中緑豊かな葉を保ちます。七十二候の「小雪」の末候では、その実が鮮やかな黄色に色づき始め、この時期を「橘始黄」と呼びます。
歴史的には、「橘」は日本におけるすべての柑橘類の総称として使われてきました。その変わらない姿から、永遠や繁栄の象徴とされています。
The Cultural and Religious Significance of Tachibana
Tachibana trees have been revered in Japan since ancient times. During the Heian period, they were planted in imperial gardens and revered as sacred trees in shrines. Their association with eternity and unchanging beauty made them symbols of good fortune.
The design of tachibana leaves and flowers has also been incorporated into traditional Japanese family crests (kamon) and the Medal of Culture, highlighting its esteemed place in the nation’s heritage.
橘の文化的・宗教的意義
橘の木は古代から日本で崇拝されてきました。平安時代には宮中の庭に植えられ、神聖な木として神社でも大切にされました。その永遠性や変わらぬ美しさから、縁起物としても親しまれています。
また、橘の葉や花のデザインは、日本の家紋や文化勲章にも取り入れられ、その高い地位を物語っています。
Tachibana in Japanese Mythology
Tachibana is believed to appear in the ancient Japanese texts Kojiki and Nihon Shoki under the name Tokijiku no Kaku no Mi—“the fruit that ripens at all times.” This mythical fruit is associated with immortality and eternal youth, emphasizing tachibana’s deep cultural roots in Japan as a symbol of timelessness and vitality.

橘は『古事記』や『日本書紀』において、「非時香実（ときじくのかくのみ）」として登場するとされています。この「いつでも実る果実」は不老不死を象徴しており、橘が日本文化において永遠性や生命力の象徴とされる背景には、この神話が深く関わっています。
