The Seasonal Phenomenon of “Sake no Uo Muragaru”
The 63rd micro-season in the traditional Japanese calendar, “Sake no Uo Muragaru,” highlights the remarkable migration of salmon upstream to spawn. This period falls between December 17th and 21st, marking the final segment of the “Daietsu” season.
Salmon, born in freshwater rivers, venture to the sea alongside snowmelt as juveniles. In the vast ocean, they grow and thrive until maturity. Then, in one of nature’s most awe-inspiring phenomena, they return to their birthplace to spawn—a behavior known as “Mother River Homing” (Bosenkaiki). This incredible navigation is made possible by the salmon’s ability to remember the unique scent of their natal river.
「鱖魚群」という季節の現象
日本の伝統的な暦の中で第63候にあたる「鱖魚群（さけのうおむらがる）」は、鮭が産卵のために川を上る様子を表現しています。この時期は、二十四節気の「大雪」の末候で、12月17日から21日頃にあたります。
鮭は川で生まれ、稚魚の頃に雪解け水とともに海に出ます。外洋で成長した後、再び産卵のために生まれ故郷の川に戻ってきます。この現象を「母川回帰（ぼせんかいき）」といい、鮭は生まれた川のにおいを覚えているため、この旅が可能になるのです。
