[2023.04.25] [English Trans] SECRET NUMBER, The 4th generation K-POP new girl group SECRET NUMBER discusses their excitement at making their debut in Japan
――On April 7th, the first event in Japan [“LIKE IT LIKE IT” Commemorative Release FAN MEETING] will finally be held in Shibuya. What are you looking forward to?
Léa: Yesterday, I went to the front of the venue, and when I thought that 'I'm finally going to do it here' my heart was pounding, I was full of excitement.
Minji: Though last year we had the opportunity to participate in the Japanese event Momotaro Festival, I'm (still) nervous because this is our first debut showcase here.
Dita: I get really nervous when I think about meeting all the Japanese fans but also really excited about it.
Léa: Dita's parents are coming to Japan from Indonesia, right? It seems my family and friends will come as well, so I'm looking forward to it.
――Last year, you guys visited Japan for the first time. Were there any events or episodes that left an impression on members at that time?
Jinny: I bought Shiroi Koibito (a Japanese Cookie) and took it home.
Zuu: Last time when I came to Japan, I rode the Shinkansen for the first time! The scenery through the window was very beautiful. Even though it was far away, I could see Mt.Fuji.
Minji: Since I love official Hige Dandism Senpai, I listened to his songs while riding the Shinkansen, and I was so moved that I cried.
Léa: I've been always wanted to eat takoyaki, so when I finally able to eat it here, I was happy.
Soodam: It was delicious!
Léa: Two days ago, members ate about 10 people's worth of shabu-shabu lol. It was amazingly delicious.
Minji: A little while ago, when I came to Japan on a personal trip, I ate Shirasu Don (A rice bowl with Shirasu fish). Because of the [THE FIRST SLAM DUNK] movie, I went to Kamakura. Recently, Léa also got hooked on Slam Dunk.
Léa: I really like it!
――Here, please introduce yourself once again.
I'm Zuu. I'm in charge of the power full dance.
I like bowling and lately, I've been into sewing. I make bags and such.
I like dance music and listen to it a lot.
My strength is I do everything with a smile, and my weakness is I’m a little bit impatient.
Soodam: Zuu often compliments us.
Minji: She always compliments us!
Dita: Every time we go abroad, we become roommates, she takes care of me. She would always say something like "Nothing missing?", she's a thoughtful person.
Léa: She likes Kuromi, even her smartphone case is also Kuromi's color.
I am the oldest and also the tallest in SECRET NUMBER.
My favorite genres are hip-hop, R&B, and also 90's music. My strength is my honesty.
Dita: Your weakness is you are too honest lol
Léa: True! I'm the type of person who doesn't feel satisfied if I don't say what I think. I like anime, "Slam Dunk", "Haikyuu!!", "Demon Slayer", "SPY×FAMILY", I like everything.
Minji: Léa is a joyful/happy person.
Soodam: She's the oldest, so she always takes good care of us, and yet she also treats us like her friend.
(Léa respects all of the members regardless of their age)
Zuu: I envy eonni for having so many hobbies but she also helped me find a new hobby.
Léa: Eh, really? I also like photography, mountaineering, making bead accessories, drawing, and reading even at home I still have a lot to do. (lol)
I'm SECRET NUMBER's Bunny Soodam.
I majored in Korean Traditional Dance for 10 years, so I think my strength is that I have Korean elegance within me.
Dita: Though Soodam is a bit *tsundere. She is actually a very kind-hearted person. There was a time when I was sick and was sleeping in my room. Soodam went to the pharmacy to buy the medicine for me in the morning and then when I woke up, she left the medicine next to my bed. I was so moved!
Léa: Because her taste preferences are similar to mine, I went out to eat takoyaki with Soodam.
*Tsundere: used to describe someone who is usually cold or cranky but occasionally shows a soft, kind, mushy side.
I'm the main vocal of SECRET NUMBER. I love Western music and J-POP, and on our official YouTube channel, there are videos of me covering songs such as Hikaru Utada's 'First Love'.
My hobby is composing, I also composed Kawaguchi Yurina's debut song. My good point is, I think my bright personality and also I smile a lot. My weakness is my clumsiness.
Dita: Minji is a super bright and sweet person.
Léa: She has a high level of empathy, for example, if I was angry about something, we would get angry together, so I feel relieved when I'm with her. She also has a delicate side maybe that's why she's an artist. She also really likes (Western-style) clothes.
I'm SECRET NUMBER's Disney Princess, Dita.
I am the main dancer. My hobby is baking. I like music regardless of genre, I listen to various songs according to my mood at that time. Lately, I like songs with strong bass. I like songs that are a little loud and intense. My strength is I am a person who can easily adapt to different people. My weakness is I am a self-assertive person (lol). But I think I can say it's also my strength. Because I think 'Love myself' is important. I can fit in with anyone, but I still put myself first.
Léa: Exactly! plus you're human after all.
Soodam: I was surprised when Dita baked a lot of sweets for us even the day before the music video shoot and such. It's not just for us, but she also made it for all the staff. And it's amazingly delicious. I want her to open a shop someday!
Zuu: Because she always has everything in her bag,
members called her Ditaemon lol. I am her roommate when we're abroad, and when I say I forgot something, she always takes the stuff out of her bag immediately and lends it to me.
Léa: I feel bad for always borrowing her stuff lol.
Since Dita probably has it, I thought I didn't have to bring my own. And she listens to almost all of our requests, and she is very kind.
I am SECRET NUMBER's charisma rapper Pink Princess, Jinny! I like HIP-HOP. The good thing about me is that I'm always smiling.
My weakness is...
Minji: You sweat a lot?
Léa: Also every day you always say you're hungry, lol.
inny: There are many foods I dislike.
Soodam: Jinny really is a funny girl.
Minji: But surprisingly she is also a very empathetic/sensitive girl.
Léa: She's the fastest to reply to a message!
The other members have a big difference between fast and slow, but Jinny is consistently the fastest to reply.
Minji: Zuu is the slowest to reply
Léa: Zuu is always Missing in action (MIA) lol
Zuu: I'm really sorry guys!
Léa: The good thing about Jinny is that she's a passionate person.
Dita: She's sexy when she speaks English.
――Please tell us the good thing about SECRET NUMBER.
Léa: That one is definitely the toughest question!
Minji: (contemplating) I think the good part about us is that we come from different countries, and we can speak many languages.
Jinny: Though all members have strong personalities, we can make use of that personality in the group as a charm point.
Léa: I know right! If the individuality/personality is too strong, as a group it won't go well (but not for us). Though we each have our own personality we respect each other and concede what should be conceded. Even from my point of view as a member, I think it's very cool when we can show our own personality.
Dita: When I first came to Korea, I didn't have any Indonesian friends so I thought I would feel very lonely. But, all the members are very warm like family, so I am very grateful.
Soodam: Another good thing about us is that when we produce an album, the members are actively involved in the production of the music. By writing the lyrics and composing the music, I think that our colors are reflected in the songs.
Zuu: SECRET NUMBER is a very fascinating group!
Even from my perspective as a member, my unnies are always so funny, and just looking at them makes me feel better.
Minji: Plus, everything feels easier when I'm with my members because I don't have to worry about anything. Earlier, Dita also said we are like a family, including at work, I have so much fun just being with members. I am grateful to be able to come to work with such a feeling.
Léa: That's why we don't have friends other than the members.
Minji: I know right! because we're all not a social person lol
note: "Inkya" (陰キャ) is definitely not a perfect equivalent for not social. the nuances/implications might be different from what they were in Japanese.
――What would you like to do in the future when you start your activities in Japan?
Soodam&Jinnny : Concert!
Léa: I want to do a guerrilla live. We want to appear in various places, do live performances, and make people know about us. There are a lot of people who do live performances on the streets in Japan right? I would like to go around various regions of Japan and do all those stuff.
Minji: I love Don Quijote, so I would like to collaborate with Don Quijote. I want to sing their theme song or their BGM and such.
Léa: We want to appear in many music programs.
I would be happy if we could participate in the *Kōhaku Uta Gassen one day.
Minji: I also want to appear in **Shabekuri 007
Léa: I also want to do a National Tour.
*Kōhaku, is an annual New Year's Eve television special produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK)
**Shabekuri 007 (しゃべくり007, Shabekuri Sebun) is a Japanese talk and variety television show featuring seven high-profile comedians alongside different guests each week with little to no scripts, produced and aired on Nippon TV.
