現在そのフロントランナー最有力候補である、与党　民進党（DPP）の
現在の蔡英文政権で副総統（Vice President）を務める頼清徳（William Lai Ching-te）氏についての記事。 (^ｰ^)

そういえば当初、鴻海（ホンハイ）精密工業の創業者の郭台銘（テリー・ゴウ）氏も野党国民党から出馬か？という、結局、話題づくりだけに終わったニュースもありました。(^_^;)

＜生い立ち、人物＞
Lai's father died in an accident in the pits when he was just 2 years old, leaving his mother to raise six children alone. Money was tight. Instead of toys, Lai had banyan trees to climb; instead of new clothes, he wore cast-offs; he didn't have privilege, he had to prove himself.

2歳のときに父を炭鉱の事故で亡くし、母は6人の子供たちを一人で育てることに。貧しい暮らし。おもちゃの代わりに木登りして遊び、着るものはお下がり(cast-offs)ばかり。 (+_+)

"Because in this environment, I worked harder, more vigorously on everything I did. It gave me a sense of determination."

「そんな環境の中、何にでも、やることには全力で頑張ってきた。
　おかげで意志の強さ(a sense of determination) が身に付いた。」 (^^)d

It's a work ethic that has already transported Lai to Harvard, work as a kidney doctor in Taiwan, and then public office as mayor of its southern city of Tainan.

米国・ハーバード大学で公衆衛生分野の修士号を取得。台湾帰国後、医師になり、そして台湾南西部の台南市の市長に。
Medical Doctor-turned politician（元医者の政治家）ですね。(^-^)v

■　Geopolitical winds continue to batter the Taiwanese.

Beijing considers the self-governing island of 23 million its sovereign territory
and has repeatedly vowed to reclaim it - by force if necessary.

中国政府は、台湾を自国の領土であると考え、必要なら武力を使ってでも、本土へ返還(reclaim) させると繰り返し誓っている。(-＿-)ｳｰﾑ

Its status remains the most combustive of the myriad squabbles that today define relations between the world's superpowers.

今日の世界の超大国（＝米中）間の関係性を決定づける無数の小競り合い(squabbles)の中でも、台湾の立場というものは、もっとも発火しやすい(most combustive)話題だ。

On four occasions, President Joe Biden has vowed to protect Taiwan from
Chinese military aggression.

■「すべての政治は地元から（All politics is local）」

The saying that "all politics is local" comes with an almighty caveat in Taiwan,
where January's election will hinge on how best to manage cross-Strait relations. The CCP loathes Lai's China-skeptic DPP and has branded its candidate a "troublemaker."

■ Global Economyにとっての「台湾」の存在

The vote also has profound global implications. Taiwan is the world's 16th-largest trading economy, exchanging $907 billion in goods and services in 2022. It produces 90% of the world's advanced semiconductor chips, which are vital for every industry but especially to the artificial intelligence boom.

やっぱ、台湾の力＝半導体チップ生産 ですよね～。
これからEVやAIの時代になっていくのですから。(#^.^#)

China and Taiwan share a language and history, but precious little else.
Taiwan ranks 10th in the world (and top in Asia) in the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2022 Democracy Index.

＜Democracy Index: 民主主義指数＞

民主主義指数（Democracy Index）は、週刊誌エコノミストを刊行するイギリスの民間企業、エコノミスト・グループ傘下の調査部門、エコノミスト・インテリジェンス・ユニット(EIU)研究所によって発表されている指数である。（ウィキペディアより）↓

この指数は、60の指標を選挙過程と多元性、政府機能、政治参加、政治文化、人権擁護の5つの部門に分類し、それに基づいたスコアの平均から計算している。（ウィキペディアより）

★確かに、国・地域別の民主主義指数 (2022年)で、台湾は第10位（アジアでトップ）です！

ちなみに、日本は16位、米国30位、中国は156位。
トップ３は、ノルウェー、ニュージーランド、アイスランド！
これもまた、興味深い。（＾～＾）

■ 台湾の未来像は？

China is ruled by Beijing's secretive Zhongnanhai leadership complex.
While Xi has called reunification "a historic mission and an unshakable commitment," Lai counters that "we are already a sovereign, independent country."

• 中南海（ちゅうなんかい Zhongnanhai）は、北京市の中心部西城区にある地区であり、かつては紫禁城の西側に隣接する皇帝の離宮だったもので、現在は中華人民共和国政府や中国共産党の中枢の建物群がある場所。 （ウィキペディアより）

★ 日本でいうところの、「永田町」のような感じですかねぇ(^_-)-☆

習近平：再統一は「歴史的ミッションであり、ゆるぎないコミットメント                   （約束事）だ！」
Lai氏の反論：「我々はすでに主権があり、独立した国になってる！」

"More and more young people today are supportive of independence," says Lai, "which means steadfast support for our way of life, including democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights."

"While semiconductors and technology industries are Taiwan's strengths,
they are also Taiwan's responsibilities towards the international community," Lai says.

おそらく、この流れでは、やっぱり来年からも台湾は民進党政権でしょう。
日本もとっくの昔に他人事でなくなってきてますから、台湾大統領選（というより）その後の動き、注目していかざるをえません。 (-_-;)
