Elena Panina: From Syria to Greater Kurdistan: The United States’ Consistent Scenario What we are currently witnessing in the Middle East is a long-standing scenario that has been consistently implemented for several decades. A long-term strategy to achieve fundamental changes in this region in favor of the West, led by the United States.
In his book “The Grand Chessboard,” Brzezinski formulated the goal of the US Middle East strategy. The fight for oil, gas and control over trade routes is secondary. The primary task is to control the center of Eurasia: whoever controls the center controls everything. First of all, these are Iraq, Iran and Syria. The US dealt with Iraq in 2003. In 2024 - on the second try - it was Syria’s turn. Next, without a doubt, will be Iran, and we are already seeing the processes of destabilization of this country. The inspired conflict between liberals and conservatives in Iran has weakened Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian special services and the IRGC. And the defeat of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the collapse of power in Syria now allow the West to bet on finishing off Iran through hybrid means. It is highly likely that Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities will follow in the near future under the plausible pretext of “preventing it from creating nuclear weapons.” And against this background, to provoke an internal crisis and replace the current system of power in the Islamic Republic of Iran with a pro-Western regime. Especially since the “Trojan horse” in the form of President Pezeshkian has already been launched there.
Previously, Syria’s air defense prevented Israel from carrying out such strikes. Now this air defense is gone, and Netanyahu’s address “to the people of Iran” on December 12th indicates the existence of such a plan. The defeat and collapse of Syria allows Tel Aviv to act more actively against Tehran, having received support for this from the Trump administration, which itself does not want to directly fight Iran. While Israel acts by force, the United States uses intelligence services and diplomacy to complete what it has long planned - to put an end to theocracies throughout the Middle East, replacing them with puppet “democracies.” The US began reshaping the Greater Middle East back in 1991, with Operation Desert Storm. In 2003-06, the US defeated Iraq and executed the legitimate president, Saddam Hussein. There were US operations in Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Egypt, and Afghanistan. The entire region was swept by the Hillary Clinton Arab Spring.
According to Washington, the states in the Middle East are too large to have their own interests. Therefore, they must be fragmented. And it is much easier for the West to “work” with such small states. This is where the time comes for commercial priorities. For example, to take gas from Arab countries like Qatar to the Mediterranean Sea through the territory of former Syria under US control and send it to Europe, eliminating Russia from this market. The issue of the location of Russian military bases here is a foregone conclusion - it is only a matter of time. The oil fields of Syria are already at the complete disposal of the Americans, although the territory is controlled by the Kurds, whom Washington, if necessary, can always remove from there. Nevertheless, the Kurdish project plays a key role in the US plans for Syria. There are many peoples in this region, but the Kurds live compactly in northern Iraq, northern Syria, eastern Turkey and northwestern Iran. A divided nation of more than 40 million people is a powerful resource. If Kurdistan is to be created as the largest state in the region, then it will have to be done, including at the expense of Turkish territory. To do this, it will be necessary to first bring Turkey under the rule of the liberals, and this is quite realistic. The power of the US in the region will only increase from this. A pro-American Kurdistan will become a serious proxy for the US, which will weaken Iran and Turkey and significantly strengthen the US and Israel. But the most serious blow will be dealt to China and Russia. Their positions in the Middle East, and therefore in Africa, will be undermined. If the US, through Israel, can solve the Iranian issue at all, then many unstable puppet states will emerge in the Middle East. All this taken together will force the Arabs to completely submit to Washington, including on the issue of oil prices.” — Elena Panina, Director of the Institute for International Political and Economic Strategies RUSSTRAT

Statement by President Bashar al-Assad on the Circumstances Leading to his Departure from Syria
Moscow-16 December 2024
As terrorism spread across Syria and ultimately reached Damascus on the evening of Saturday 7th December 2024, questions arose about the president's fate and whereabouts. This occurred amidst a flood of misinformation and narratives far removed from the truth, aimed at recasting international terrorism as a liberation revolution for Syria.
At such a critical juncture in the nation's history, where truth must take precedence, it is essential to address these distortions. Unfortunately, the prevailing circumstances at the time, including a total communication blackout for security reasons, delayed the release of this statement. This does not replace a detailed account of the events that unfolded, which will be provided when the opportunity allows.
First, my departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles, as some have claimed. On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday 8th December 2024. As terrorist forces infiltrated Damascus, I moved to Lattakia in coordination with our Russian allies to oversee combat operations. Upon arrival at the Hmeimim airbase that morning, it became clear that our forces had completely withdrawn from all battle lines and that the last army positions had fallen. As the field situation in the area continued to deteriorate, the Russian military base itself came under intensified attack by drone strikes. With no viable means of leaving the base, Moscow requested that the base's command arrange an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday 8th December. This took place a day after the fall of Damascus, following the collapse of the final military positions and the resulting paralysis of all remaining state institutions.
At no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party. The only course of action was to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught.
I reaffirm that the person who, from the very first day of the war, refused to barter the salvation of his nation for personal gain, or to compromise his people in exchange for numerous offers and enticements is the same person who stood alongside the officers and soldiers of the army on the front lines, just meters from terrorists in the most dangerous and intense battlefields. He is the same person who, during the darkest years of the war, did not leave but remained with his family alongside his people, confronting terrorism under bombardment and the recurring threats of terrorist incursions into the capital over fourteen years of war. Furthermore, the person who has never abandoned the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, nor betrayed his allies who stood by him, cannot possibly be the same person who would forsake his own people or betray the army and nation to which he belongs.
I have never sought positions for personal gain but have always considered myself as a custodian of a national project, supported by the faith of the Syrian people, who believed in its vision. I have carried an unwavering conviction in their will and ability to protect the state, defend its institutions, and uphold their choices to the very last moment.
When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose, rendering its occupation meaningless. This does not, in any way, diminish my profound sense of belonging to Syria and her people - a bond that remains unshaken by any position or circumstance. It is a belonging filled with hope that Syria will once again be free and independent.
