Stay-at-home economy, revenge consumption and what's next ?
“Consumption for a moment of lull” or, put simply, “spend money while you can”. This is another catchword I read in a Japanese newspaper recently.
It was only a month ago that I wrote about revenge consumption in Japan.
But things have changed since then. A mild surge in the number of new Omicron infections is now on the horizon in Japan.
People are buying sets of deluxe dishes (osechi) for the New Year and dining at hip restaurants. A shift in the general mood has set in. People’s fear that tighter restrictions may come back soon is said to be the driving force behind the above-average consumption at year’s end.
We, the translators, are always busy in catching up with new coinage at these unprecedented times.
