アフリカ出身の僕が動物番組を見て思った事　What I think watching animal programs as someone of African origin

ナショナルジオグラフィックが放送している動物の映像を見て、動物の振る舞いと行動に驚く事がある。
ウガンダに住んでいた時、住んでいた場所から車で４時間程の場所にある国立公園があったが、その公園には様々な動物が生息していた。
現地で多くの人が見に行っていた動物がカバ。自分もカバに興味を持ち、カバが哺乳類の一種でユニークな動物だと思う事が多い。カバを始めて見た印象は体が大きく、控えめな動物であるということだった。カバは草食系の動物だがライオンより危険とされている。
現地の人からカバには近づかない方が良いと注意喚起されていた。
カバは最も強力な咬合力の1つを持っている。もし噛まれた場合ほぼ逃げられない。カバが体が大きいから遅い動物だと思う人は多いが、実際にイメージとは異なりめちゃくちゃ速い動物だ。
カバは最大時速48キロで走る。これは人類最速の男より速い。ちなみに最も速い人間のトップスピードは44.7キロ。
当初、カバは1750kgから4960kgなのにその巨体で走れるとは思わなかった。カバが唯一自由に暮らしているのはアフリカと南米のコロンビアの川か海。
誤ってカバの存在に気づかず漁業をしている人の多くが襲われている。カバは相手を踏みにじるだけでなく、相手をかむ場合が多い。カバを見たければ一定の距離を保ち見る必要がある。
通常カバは群れで生活をしている。他の仲間と常に地権争いを繰り広げているらしい。

通常おとなしく見えるカバは7歳になると優位を主張してしまう。カバは轟音とあくびをするイメージがある。轟音とあくびをする事で他のカバの仲間に強力な歯を見せびらかしている。
カバはある一定の場所に生息し多くなった場合より過激になる。常に資源などの奪い合いが多いし、脅威と見なされるものに突進する。
ある意味人間の社会に似ている。ウガンダではカバが牛か人を襲った事がニュースにもなる。生存する人もいるがだいたい足か腕を失う場合が多い。
世界にはカバのような野生動物が多く、未だに聞いたこともない動物もある。ナショジオを見て学ぶ事が多い。

I am always surprised by the behavior of animals when watching shows aired by National Geographic.
When I lived in Uganda, there was a National reserve close to 4 hours from where I resided.
This Reserve still has many animals.
The most popular animal in the Reserve is a hippopotamus. Most people living in the area look forward to watching hippos.
I have always been interested in hippos. Hippos are very unique mammals.
My first impression of seeing a hippo was that of a large and unobtrusive animal.
Hippos are herbivorous animals but strangely enough, they are considered more dangerous than lions.
While watching hippos swim around, I was warned to stay far away from them.
Hippos have one of the strongest bites. If you are bitten by a hippo, its almost impossible to escape from its grip.
At first glance, most people think hippos are slow because of their size. However, hippos are extremely fast which contradicts their usual image
Hippos run at a maximum speed of 48 km/hr. This is faster than the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt. His top speed is 44.7 km/hr
Hippos weigh between 1750 and 4960 kg. Its surprising to know that hippos are fast runners in spite of their size.
Hippos only live freely in the rivers of Africa and Colombia. Typically, hippos attack fishermen who are unaware that they are swimming around.
When hippos attack, they tend to trample and bite. It is important to maintain a safe distance when seeing one.
Hippos are always jostling trying to dominate each other. Males have a tendency to assert their dominance after age seven apparently.
Hippos are known for roaring and yawning. By roaring and yawning, they show off their sizable and sharp teeth to fellow hippos.
Once hippos reproduce and become crowded in an area, they begin to fight each other and compete for resources.
They will also charge towards something they perceive as a threat. In some sense, a hippo's world is similar to a human's.
In Uganda, news of hippos attacking a cow or person is presented at times.
Most attack survivors either lose an arm or leg.
There are several wild animals like hippos around the world that we rarely hear about.
I often learn by watching National Geographic shows.
