Terryとは開店直後の朝のカフェで会った。彼はLAに住んでいて滞在中のホテルの近くで待ち合わせをした。少し早く着いてしまった僕は、窓際の席で彼を待った。現れた彼は前日遅くまで人と会っていたらしく、少し疲れた表情で現れたのだけれど、目が合うととても嬉しそうに僕を迎えてくれた。
Web3や、日本の文化のこと、これからのこと。雑談というにはシリアスな話題を、僕にもわかる言葉で楽しそうに語るうちに彼の顔に精気が満ち溢れてくる。いつものTerryの顔だ。彼に断って一回だけシャッターを切った。
彼のことを説明するのは少々難しい。自分の言葉で言えるのは、この先何をするのか楽しみでたまらない、日本的な誠実さとアメリカ的（想像だけど）な正直さを併せ持った“とてつもなく”魅力的な人物であるということ。
日本におけるグローバル・コミュニティ「8ships」のファウンダーであり、2023年にはVeeConのスピーカーとして登壇したかと思えば、先日行われたWebXにも登壇するなど、八面六臂の活躍中で正直「どんな人？」と言われれば信頼できるエネルギッシュで楽しい人と答えるのだけど、「何やってる人？」と聞かれると「…よくわかんない」としか言えない。僕の理解を超えた活動規模の人。
