Web Seminar on earth: A Reflection on Our First Session
Two days ago, we held the first session of our web seminar series focusing on soil. This session revolved around the themes of "Soil and Circulation" and "Utilizing Waste" in the contexts of both architecture and agriculture. We were thrilled to receive over 100 registrations from diverse fields—including not only architecture but also food, farming, and landscaping—and welcomed more than 60 participants to the session. This turnout reaffirmed the growing interest and enthusiasm surrounding the topic of soil. To everyone who joined, thank you so much for your participation.
Reflecting on the strong interest in soil from such a wide range of disciplines, I am increasingly convinced that the central question for our future society must be: "How can we return to earth?”
This may sound bold, but I believe it holds true:
"Sustainability means returning to earth."
Of course, I fully understand that creating 100% soil-returnable materials and structures would make not only modern architecture but also contemporary lifestyles and society as a whole unfeasible. I, myself, do not live in a way that fully embodies this ideal.
However, if we look 1,000 years into the future and consider the long-term direction of society, it feels like the time has come to establish this principle as a core value and to state it with clarity and conviction.
Earth Architecture and Fermentation
Just like fermented foods, soil walls are made by mixing clay and straw and allowing them to ferment. The photo below shows the process of creating soil walls for an open-air bath I designed in Ishinomaki in 2015 as part of a post-earthquake reconstruction facility, MORIUMIUS. It documents everything from collecting the local soil to building the walls.
These walls were crafted entirely with clay, sand, and straw, ensuring that they would eventually return to earth.

In the second session, I will share insights from last year’s seminar on contemporary earthen architecture in Germany, as well as discuss the current state and use of surplus soil in Belgium and Japan.

一昨日、土をテーマにしたウェブセミナーの第一回目目を行いました。
今回は「建築」と「農」における「土と循環」「廃棄物の活用」
がテーマでしたが建築だけでなく食や農、庭を始め様々なジャンルから100名以上の申込と60名以上参加があり改めて「土」への関心の高さを改めて感じました。参加された皆様、誠にありがとうございました。
これだけ各方面から「土」に興味がある方が多くいらっしゃることを考えると私としてはこれからの社会は「いかに土に還るか？」が一番の共通テーマではないかと改めて感じました。
極端な発言になるかもしれませんが
「持続可能性とは土に還ることである。」
そういい切ってもいいと思いました。
もちろん つくるもの100％「土に還る」ものでなければならない
となったら、現代建築はもとより現代の生活と社会が成り立たなくなるのは重々承知です。
自分も完璧にそのような暮らしができているわけではありませんが、
これから1000年を見すえた社会のあり方を考えると、少なくともその理念を根幹に据え、はっきり言い切る時期にきているのではないかと思います。
■ 土の建築と発酵
発酵食品と同じく土壁も粘土とわらを混ぜて発酵させてつくります。
写真は2015年に震災復興施設として石巻で設計させていただいたMORIUMIUSの露天風呂で現地の土の採取から土壁ができるまでの様子です。
この壁は土に還るよう粘土と砂、わらだけでつくりました。
