How to play TABOO online? (Day 17)
Today I held the 2nd online English lunch for my lovely colleagues. We played the word guessing game. (Check my Day 2 post about how I designed the online English lunch event)
Luckily, we had an English native joining the lunch today, and she had been an English teacher in Japan for more than 10 years.
She told us that word guessing game is actually called Taboo.
The objective of the game is for a player to have their partners guess the word on the player's card without using the word itself or five additional words listed on the card.
Wiki
I searched "Taboo, word guess" and found many Taboo board games. Such fun!
Since I just wrote a survival guide for online event hosts, I applied some of the tips in the post to the lunch event today :D
A kick-ass slide deck
Starting with a delicious cover, I aimed to create a welcoming and soothing atmosphere for the participants. It's lunchtime, remember ;)
BTW, the nice salad photo is from Unsplash which provides freely usable and quality images. All designers love it.

Set the event goals
Basically, my colleagues join the English lunch to learn and to socialize. Therefore, the bottom line of the lunch event is to accomplish three goals:
・ The participant learn at least 1 new word/phrase
・ The participant learn at least 1 learning tip
・ The participant speak English at least twice in the event
Based on the goals, I made a slide for language learning tips.
Tip
Always learn phrases, not individual words.

The word is sent to one participant via a private message.

Minimalism
It's lunchtime and everyone might be holding a plate or chopsticks, which means he/she might possibly keep a distance from the monitor.
Do not show them a slide full of details unless you want to torture their eyes. See the slide design below which uses monotone with big fonts and a clear hierarchy:
I also picked up some vocabulary that we hear frequently these days, so that participants feel relatable and useful.

The next lunch...
I had great fun today by doing the event experience design, including the event process, the slide visual, selecting English words, hosting the event...
There are so many aspects and details I can play with. That is why I love the UX (user experience) design! However, the side effect is that I reached the point of burnout often. Well, that is another story.
Anyways, I am so lucky to always have someone who dares to try my designs, in this case, an online English lunch.
Lastly, let me end the post today by the card:
