How to look back? (Day11)
Is looking back necessary?
Why are we required by our company to do performance review every quarter? What can we get by looking back?
To be honest, I was the don't-look-back type of people by default. For instance, I thought reviewing test sheet to figure out why I made those mistakes is not fun at all and it was wasting life when I was a student.
Part of the reasons might just because I did not want to remind myself of what a looser I was.
Many quotes related to looking back tend to persuade us that 'Looking back helps us move forward'. Like this one below:
However, you can always find opposite quotes next to it suggested by Google. Like this one:
That is so helpful. Now we are all confused, to look back or not to look back?
Life is not a straight line
I have turned my 30s for a while, gradually I realise that this world does not function black and white. Like this saying 'Success is not permanent and failure is not final'.
We define it! What's even better, we can define it again and again in our lives. We are the narrator of our own story.
This is how I look at my life now:
How to look back?
Simple, interview yourself. Try following:
1. Greet yourself - Hi, it's been a week, how are you?
2. Find out facts - What did you do this week? How did you do that?
3. Dig deeper - Why did you do that? How do you feel?
4. Form insights - What have you learned about yourself?
5. Look ahead - What will you do next week?
In the process of reviewing your past, try not to judge and criticize yourself. That is not the purpose of looking back, it is no fun if you do that.
As I mentioned above, we are our life's narrator. We have the authority to write and rewrite our history.
Sometimes, other people might be harsh on us. A lot them always say NO to us, don't be one of them.
Look up, it's Friday! We had a great week and will have another one.
