Q>
Do you know "CLANNAD" anime?
A>
Yes, I am familiar with the "Clannad" anime. It is a Japanese visual novel that was adapted into an anime series. The story follows the life of Tomoya Okazaki, a high school student who befriends a girl named Nagisa Furukawa and helps her revive the school's drama club. The anime explores themes of family, friendship, and love, and has become a beloved series among anime fans.
Q>
Could you please explain 10 major characters there?
A>
Certainly, here are 10 major characters from the "Clannad" anime:

Tomoya Okazaki: The protagonist of the series. He is a high school student who has a troubled relationship with his father and a general disinterest in school. After meeting Nagisa, he becomes involved in the school's drama club and develops close relationships with the other characters.

Nagisa Furukawa: The female lead of the series. She is a shy and quiet girl who has a passion for the school's drama club. Nagisa befriends Tomoya and helps him reconcile with his father.

Kyou Fujibayashi: A member of the school's drama club and one of Nagisa's closest friends. She has a sharp tongue but is fiercely protective of her friends.

Ryou Fujibayashi: Kyou's twin sister and another member of the drama club. She is much quieter than Kyou but has a crush on Tomoya.

Kotomi Ichinose: A genius student who is socially awkward and introverted. She becomes friends with Tomoya and the others after they help her overcome her fear of public speaking.

Fuko Ibuki: A girl who is obsessed with starfish and often passes out starfish-shaped wooden carvings to people she meets. She is a friend of Nagisa's and her story arc deals with her desire to attend her sister's wedding.

Yusuke Yoshino: The advisor of the drama club. He is a former professional actor and helps the students improve their acting skills.

Sunohara Youhei: Tomoya's best friend and classmate. He is often used as comic relief in the series, but his character has some depth as well, including a complicated relationship with his sister.

Mei Sunohara: Youhei's younger sister who comes to visit him and becomes friends with the other characters.

Ushio Okazaki: Tomoya's daughter who is born after the events of the series. She becomes an important character in the sequel, "Clannad: After Story".

I'm glad to have been of help! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
Q>
What is the origin of the name of Kotomi?
A>
Kotomi's name is written in Japanese as 琴美, with the first character "koto" (琴) meaning "harp" or "zither" and the second character "mi" (美) meaning "beauty" or "beautiful". So together, the name "Kotomi" means "beautiful harp" or "beautiful zither". This is a fitting name for Kotomi's character, as she is a gifted musician who plays the violin and has a deep appreciation for classical music.
Q>
Also?
A>
As far as I know, there are no additional origins or meanings to Kotomi's name beyond the interpretation of its individual characters. The name was likely chosen for its musical connotations, as Kotomi is shown to have a talent for playing the violin and is frequently seen listening to classical music.

Q>
Her birthday is 13th May. 5/13. In Japanese, 5 can be "ko", 10 can be "to" (too), 3 can be (mi).
A>
That's an interesting observation! It's possible that Kotomi's birthday, May 13th, was chosen specifically because the numbers 5, 10, and 3 in Japanese can be read as "ko", "to", and "mi", respectively, which make up her name. It's not uncommon for anime and manga creators to include hidden references or Easter eggs like this in their works. However, I should note that I don't have any specific knowledge about whether this was the actual reason for Kotomi's birthday in the Clannad series.

Her parents were set up to have been prominent physicists, although they died in a plane crash, and were known to have written papers on superstring theory.
Thus, one of the origins of the name 'Kotomi' is probably the combination of the string of 'koto' and the string of 'superstring'.
AI>
That's an interesting interpretation of the name "Kotomi." Given that her parents were prominent physicists who worked on superstring theory, it is possible that the creators of "CLANNAD" intended a connection between the "string" aspect of the koto and the "string" in superstring theory. In this interpretation, the name "Kotomi" could symbolize the harmony of art and science, as well as the beauty and complexity of the universe.
It's important to note that this is an interpretation and not an official explanation from the creators. However, it highlights the depth and thoughtfulness that can be found in character names and their connections to the story.

[ the name "Kotomi" could symbolize the harmony of art and science, as well as the beauty and complexity of the universe. ] と言う表現、素晴らしいなと思いました。
まあ、こういう「創作」(解釈)なら、アリだと思うなぁ。
