Stepping back to 1987, the genesis of the "adventure-spec" genre was birthed with the introduction of the R100GS. This model, engineered for both on-road and off-road extensive travels, became an archetype of the modern adventure motorcycle. Nearly every aspect of the bike mirrored the GS – from its engine, drivetrain, frame, to the state-of-the-art BMW Paralever suspension.

What set it apart? A massive 34L fuel tank for extended rides, a large adjustable windscreen to protect the rider from wind and harsh conditions, tube pipe protection extending to the front fairing, under guards, engine guards, and more. The bike wasn’t just designed to handle all situations; it was practically built to conquer the infamous Paris-Dakar rally from the outset. More than just a GS variant, this adventurous spirit would drive the evolution of the GS series, eventually culminating in the "GS Adventure."

Launched in 1989, the Paris-Dakar can be fittingly termed the forefather of the GS Adventure lineage.

A Legacy of Excellence:

Ending production in 1996 with the R80GS Basic, BMW Motorrad continued to improve and evolve the iconic air-cooled 4-stroke OHV 2-valve boxer engine. The fundamental design principles, including the engine layout, vertical crankshaft, integrated transmission, shaft drive, and direct connect "Compact Drive System," have remained steadfast since the debut of BMW Motorrad's R32 in 1923. Over the years, countless refinements were made, from oil circulation systems to pushrod configurations, gaskets, electronics, and materials. BMW Motorrad's unwavering commitment to the OHV boxer engine would pave the way for the eventual transition to the R259 series boxer engine.
