地域の公立高等学校に入学
片田舎の山間部から自転車で片道２時間
早起きには慣れていたので特に問題は無し

高校３年間の英語学習は受験英語のみに終始
ほぼ毎日の教科書学習、定期テスト、外部模擬テスト
ひたすら英単語を覚え、参考書を読み、問題集と格闘

１年ごとに担当英語教師が替わる
高1では極端に体の細い「針金先生」
高２ではいつも柔和な笑顔を浮かべていた「ニンマリ先生」
高３ではスベスベしたうりざね顔の「宮様先生」

教科書の予習、授業では一人づつ指名されて読む、訳す
生徒たちのカタカナ読みに対する助言は一切無し
発音指導、リスニング指導無し

高校で期待していた「耳に心地よい英語」の秘密は解明されず終い
card の ar と girl の ir の発音は同じなのか違うのかわからず終い
終始一貫、長い英文を平坦なカタカナ棒読みで読んでもそれでよし

中学３年の時の衝撃的な外国人カップルとの出会いの思い出が心に残る
「英語が話せるようになりたい！」強い願望は強まるばかり
ただ、高校での英語学習ではその願望には疑問詞が数えきれないほどつく

救いは片道２時間の自転車通学
時に小声で時に大声でビートルズの歌を口ずさむ
主に３曲、Let It Be　、Yesterday　、Something

必死に覚えたそれぞれ一番の歌詞をいい加減なメロディーに乗せて歌う
