Mini Interview with 万事快調(Banji Kaicho / Fredy J)

米国バージニア州リッチモンドのFMラジオ局「WRIR」にて、J-POP/アンビエント/ジャズ/フォーク/ロック/エクスペリメンタル/サウンド・トラック、と幅広い、日本〜アジアの音楽を紹介する番組を制作する「万事快調」ことFREDY J。

数年前、私が参加するアンビエント・ユニット「UNKNOWN ME」の楽曲を放送で取り上げて頂いた時から交流が始まったのですが、毎週放送される万事快調氏の番組の、幅広い日本の音楽からのセレクションには驚かされました。

近年では、シティ・ポップや、環境音楽など、日本の過去の音楽が(やっと)国外の音楽ファンにも親しまれていますが、万事快調氏の深く熱心な音源探索は、日本、日本の音楽への、オリエンタリズム/エキゾチカ的な興味ではなく、深い愛情を感じさせるものでした。

日本の音楽好きでも知らないようなマニアックな作品をピックアップしながらも、なるほど、これとこれが繋がるのか、こう聴こえるのか、と興味深く新鮮な外からの視点も感じさせます。

昨年の来日時に邂逅、レコード・ハントを共にし、聡明でナイスな人柄にも触れた私は、私のサウンドクラウドのゲスト・ミックスに参加を要請しました。

その素晴らしい、日本のダブとラヴァーズ・ロックの、ラジオ・スタイルDJミックスの服読書として、ミニ・インタビューをさせて頂きました。

・日本の音楽に興味を持ったきっかけはなんですか？

中国で育ったので、日本の音楽とその影響は文字通りいたるところにありました。
アニメやゲーム音楽もそうだし、広東ポップやマンダリン・ポップ(＊1)も、80年代から90年代の日本の歌手をたくさんカバーしていました。
大学に入ってから音楽により真剣に取り組むようになり、Douban(＊2)やBBSのようなオンライン・コミュニティのおかげで、日本の音楽も含め、いろいろなタイプの音楽を聴きました。
中国には、サイケ、ノイズ、ロック、フォークなど、日本のアンダーグラウンドのファンがちゃんといます。
J-POP、ヴィジュアル系、ACG(＊3)なども音楽好きの間では人気があります。
ここ数年、日本音楽への関心の高まりが世界を席巻しています。
日本の音楽についての話題はかつてないほど増えています。
この間、私はアメリカに移り住み、より多くの時間をディグに費やすようになったので、私が愛する日本の音楽をすべて共有するために、このラジオ番組を始めることにしました。

・日本の音楽が好きな理由を教えてください。また、他の国の音楽との違いは何だと思いますか？

あるジャンルやスタイルだけでも、日本のアーティストの音楽がこんなにたくさんあることにいつも感心します。
確かにその多くはアメリカや欧米からコピーされたものですが、すぐに日本やアジア流に翻訳され、より共感できるようになっていて、それがまた面白いんです。
例えば、渋谷系はラウンジ、ジャズ、ハウス、フレンチ・ポップスなど、あらゆるものを吸収しながら、それらを日本流に組み合わせて表現しています。
最高にクールなサウンドで、当時の東京のファッション、若者文化、音楽業界の状況を反映しています。
個人的には、日本語の発音がとても美しい歌だとも感じます。
メロディーそのものに聞こえることが多いです。

・日本の音楽はどうやって買うのですか？

主にDiskUnionかYahooオークションで注文しています。
最近は、新しいアーティストや新しい音楽をサポートするために、Bandcampから購入することも簡単になりました。

・様々な年代、ジャンルの日本の音楽に詳しいと感じます。
今、特に興味を持っているジャンルや日本のミュージシャンがいれば教えてください。

70年代の邦楽（ジャズ、フュージョン、フォーク）、80年代の邦楽（シティポップ、環境音楽、ニューウェーブ）が流行っています。
90年代の邦楽はまだ注目されていないものが多いので、次の流行になると思います。
現在でも主流となっている多くの音楽が、当時から形作られ始めた、本当に魅力的な時代でした。
私はこの時代の日本のダブやハウス・ミュージックをたくさん見つけて聴いてきました。
このCD時代の日本のヒップホップ、エクスペリメンタル、エレクトロニック・ミュージックをもっと買いたいですね。

スペイシーで変わったダブ・ビートと甘いラヴァーズ・ロックで1時間を分けてみました。
最近ハマっている中西俊夫さんの曲も2曲入っています。
先月、彼の遺産に敬意を表してラジオ番組を作ったばかりです。

Mini interview with Banji Kaicho

FREDY J, aka "Banji-Kaicho," produces a program on WRIR, an FM radio station in Richmond, Virginia, USA, introducing a wide range of Japanese and Asian music, including J-Pop, ambient, jazz, folk, rock, experimental, and sound tracks.

Our relationship began several years ago when he featured the music of my ambient unit "UNKNOWN ME" on the air, and I was amazed at the wide selection of Japanese music on his weekly program.

In recent years, music from Japan's past, such as city pop and environmental music, has (finally) become familiar to music fans outside of Japan, but "Banji-Kaicho's" deep and dedicated search for sound sources showed not just an Orientalist/exotic interest in Japan and Japanese music, but a deep love for it. While picking up maniacal works that even Japanese music lovers do not know about, he also gives us an interesting and fresh outside perspective, wondering how this and that are connected and how they sound.

I had a chance to meet him when he came to Japan last year, and after sharing a record hunt with him and learning about his intelligent and nice personality, I asked him to be a guest mixer on my Soundcloud project.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to do a mini-interview with him, as a radio-style DJ mix outfit of Japanese dub and lovers-rock.

・How did you become interested in Japanese music?

Since I grew up in China, Japanese music and its influence was literally everywhere. Anime and video game music for one, also Canto-pop and Mandarin-pop covered a lot of 80s/90s Japanese singers back then. When I became more serious about music after getting into college, and thanks to the growing online communities like douban and bbs, I tried a lot of different types of music, including many from Japan. There’s a decent fanbase of Japanese underground in China, including psych, noise, rock and folk. J-pop, Visual-kei and ACG music are also very popular among other music lovers.

These years, the increasing interest in Japanese music has swept the world. Talks about Japanese music are more than ever. During this time I moved to the US and got to spend more time digging, so I decided to start this radio show to share all the Japanese music that I love.

・Why do you like Japanese music, and what do you think makes it different from music from other countries?

I’m always impressed by how much music there is to choose from, by Japanese artists, even in just a certain genre or style. Yes many of them were copied from the US and the west where the type was born, but they are soon translated into a Japanese/Asian way that I can relate more, which also made it interesting. For example, Shibuya-kei absorbed everything from lounge to jazz to house to French pop, but combined and presented them in such a Japanese way! It’s the coolest sound and really reflected the whole fashion, youth culture and music industry status in Tokyo at the time.

Personally, I also found the pronunciation of Japanese is very beautiful in singing. They often sound like melodies themselves.

・How do you buy Japanese music?

I mostly order from DiskUnion or Yahoo auction. Nowadays it’s also quite easy to buy from Bandcamp to support new artists and new music.

・I feel that I know a lot about Japanese music of various ages and genres.
What genres or Japanese musicians, if any, are you particularly interested in at the moment?

There have been popular trends regarding 70s (Jazz, Fusion, Folk) and 80s Japanese music (City Pop, Kankyo Ongaku, New Wave). I think 90s Japanese music will be the next thing as a lot of them are still under the radar. And it was truly a fascinating period where a lot of music that’s still dominant nowadays began to come into shape back then. I’ve found and listened to a lot of Japanese Dub and House music from this period. I’d love to invest more on Japanese Hip-Hop, Experimental and Electronic music from this CD age.

I’m very glad to be invited to make this mix! I tried to split the hour with both spacey, unusual dub beats and some sweet Lovers Rock. It also includes two tracks by Toshio Nakanishi who is my recent obsession. I just made a radio show last month in honor of his legacy.
