From Solitude to Light: Takaaki Sano's Discovery of the Truth of Life and His Photography Philosophy

Takaaki Sano's unique perspective as a photographer and his deep inner exploration are reflected in his work. The source of his philosophy lies in the challenges he faced from childhood to his years of isolation, and in the profound realization of the "interconnectedness of life."

Born in 1982 in Adachi, Tokyo as a third-generation member of Soka Gakkai, Sano was introspective from a young age. During his early years in kindergarten, he struggled with selective mutism and an introverted nature, which fueled a sense of isolation that deeply influenced his later self-exploration. Even as a child, he grappled with questions about the universe, religion, life, and death, with no way to share his thoughts, leaving him constantly feeling alone.

During his elementary school years, although he excelled in a baseball team, he faced bullying and violence, further isolating him from the outside world. Later, he stopped attending school and spent about seven years in isolation. During this period, his exposure to music, especially Michael Jackson, ignited a new form of self-expression. However, mental turmoil also took its toll, leading to his forced hospitalization. In the extreme confinement of a psychiatric ward, where his mind and body were pushed to their limits, he experienced a profound realization of the "interconnectedness of life." This experience became the core of his creative sense.

Sano's photographic works reflect this continuity of life and the symbolic imagery of light that emerged from such extreme experiences. Through photography, he expresses the connection between his inner world and the external, inviting viewers to sense the mystery of life. At the heart of his creative process is the "golden glittering stream of light" he once saw in the psychiatric ward, which now forms the nucleus of his work.

His exhibitions are more than just visual experiences; they prompt viewers to reflect deeply on life’s essence and engage in introspection. Through Sano's work, we are invited to touch upon his past and the truth of life that he has discovered.
