Takaaki Sano Photo Exhibition "Hidden": Reflections from Days of Attendance on the “Hidden Stories of the Heart”

Currently running at Liike, a stylish salon in Daikanyama, the Takaaki Sano Photo Exhibition “Hidden” transforms the entire venue into a unique space that feels like a “hideaway for the heart.” The exhibition captures encounters with people and beautiful landscapes, summoning memories hidden within each visitor. Reflecting on my days at the exhibition so far, I’d like to share the enchanting appeal of "Hidden" and highlight what awaits on the final day.

Day 1 (October 1): Encounters and "Opening of the Heart"

With the high turnout due to Tokyo Citizen’s Day, numerous visitors, including a family friend from college, brought young children who enjoyed time with the art. It was truly rewarding to engage children through creative interactions with the works, as we drew pictures together and created stories around the art. Art has the power to open the heart, and watching even the most reserved guests embrace the space and enjoy the exhibit reflects the deep theme of "Hidden": the liberation of hidden emotions.

Day 2 (October 14): Installation and "Dialogue with Oneself"

On this day, we introduced a new layout focusing on natural light to enhance a style where the photos gathered into one concentrated display space. Additionally, a bar was set up where visitors could sit back with a drink, creating an ideal setting for reflecting on the artwork and on their own inner thoughts. The popular voting encouraged further interaction between visitors and the artwork, with a commemorative postcard gift for participants. The result was a setting where each guest could more deeply encounter the art, inviting a quiet dialogue within.

Day 3 (October 15): Reunions and "Revival of Memory"

The third day welcomed a mix of old friends, former students, and newcomers, giving rise to nostalgic reunions that filled the space with memories. Among the highlights was the appearance of some of my former students from Soka High School, whose presence moved me profoundly. Observing how these visitors conversed about their memories around the photos underscored the exhibition’s theme as a “crossroads of time,” reviving past memories and forging new connections between the artwork and its viewers.

Day 4 (October 22): Resonant Hearts and “Dialogue Through Art”

This day brought in another vibrant group of visitors, with new friends, former colleagues, and past students, making it a special day for reminiscing and reconnecting. A student from my time teaching at the Shanghai Japanese School also visited, now grown into a university student, which left a lasting impression on me. These reunions affirmed the exhibition’s ability to touch people’s hearts, spark self-reflection, and serve as a stepping stone for future aspirations. Watching visitors thoughtfully engage with the art highlighted “Hidden”’s role as a source of human connection and introspection.

What Makes "Hidden" Special: A Heart’s Hideaway Slightly Removed from Everyday Life

The hallmark of Takaaki Sano’s "Hidden" lies in its space for visitors to connect with themselves through art. Each photo blends light and shadow to express hidden emotions, enfolding the viewer in a unified structure where the space and the work are one. Every piece captures unique perspectives and the passage of time in both Japan and abroad, drawing out a narrative that resonates within each visitor.

Highlights for the Final Day (October 29)

Tuesday, October 29, is the last day of the exhibition. After many encounters, "Hidden" has evolved into a unique space that connects with the individual spirit of each visitor. Here are some key features to enjoy on the final day:
