Japan supermarket sales get COVID bump in 2020

Major supermarkets across Japan enjoyed a bump in sales in 2020 as the coronavirus prompted consumers to dine more often at home. It was the first annual increase in five years.

The Japan Chain Stores Association says sales came to about 120 billion dollars, up 0.9 percent from 2019. The last increase was in 2015, which came after a consumption tax hike suppressed demand the previous year. Sales of food typically account for nearly 70 percent of the total. They jumped by 4.7 percent, with many people steering clear of restaurants and cooking more meals at home.

On the other hand, the increase in the number of people working remotely caused a slump in clothing sales, which fell by 16.9 percent.
