【英訳】侏儒の言葉16:人生
Life
- For Mr Tei’ichi Ishiguro -
Suppose you have never learnt swimming: if someone told you to swim, you would find it impossible. Likewise, if someone told you to run when you have never learnt running, you would surely find it unreasonable. However, we are given ridiculous orders as such, as soon as we are born.
Did we learn how to live when we were still in the womb? Although we didn’t, the moment we are born, we are supposed to begin leading a life anyway, which resembles a large stadium. Of course there is no swimming well unless you have ever learnt swimming, and you will likely fall behind others unless you have ever learnt running. Therefore, you will never get out of the stadium of life without getting wounded.
Well, you might hear it said: Look at your forerunners, and you will realise what to do. Nevertheless, you could not immediately learn swimming after watching a hundred swimmers, nor running after observing a thousand runners. Furthermore, each of those swimmers has struggled for air in the water when they were beginners, and every runner is covered with earth of the stadium. Notice that behind those triumphant smiles of the world’s leading athletes are usually hidden frowns.
Life is something like the Olympics organised by lunatics. We have to learn how to cope with it, while actually coping with it. If you cannot stand these silly games, you had best get the hell out. Certainly, suicide is a possible option we can take. If you would like to stay, though, you should not be afraid and keep working hard.
Or,
Life is something like a box of matches: it is stupid to deal with them seriously, but if you don’t deal with them with care, they can be dangerous.
Or,
Life is something like a book with many pages missing. It can’t be called a complete copy, but it forms a book after all.
