Social Anxiety Disorder
It is normal to be nervous in some situations. For example, giving a presentation or going on a date may cause butterflies in your stomach. But in social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, daily interactions produce significant fear, anxiety, self- consciousness, and embarrassment because you fear being looked over or judged by others.
In social anxiety disorder or SAD, fear and anxiety lead to avoidance that can disrupt your life. Severe stress can affect your daily routine, school, work, or other activities. Social anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder frequently happen together. Social anxiety carries an increased risk of suicide and alcohol and drug abuse; the good news is these both disorders are treatable.
Social anxiety is different from shyness. Shyness is generally short-term and does not affect one's lifestyle. Social anxiety is exhausting and persistent.
