映画制作日記 #24 「これが撮れたからいい映画」 | Production Notes #23 "This is a good movie because I got to shoot it”

In film, there are scenes (cuts) that are called master shots. A master shot is a representative picture that symbolizes the film. A master shot is a scene that is already in your mind when you are writing a plot or a script. In some cases, the first scene that pops into your head is the one that you will develop into a story. When I'm out on location, I have a hard time finding a landscape to shoot this scene. In this case, it was the coast of Komatsushima City. This time it was the coast of Komatsushima City. We came here when I was going around with Mr. Miyoshi, the scriptwriter, to do a preliminary inspection for that purpose. I was thinking, "Oh, this is going to be the master shot. Finally, the day of shooting came. I was very particular about the beautiful evening scenery, and my assistant directors, Junichi and his team, worked hard to find a time when my schedule was even tighter than usual, and after staring at the weather forecast every day, the time had come. It was brilliant. The scenery and the acting were superb. The adrenaline was pumping. However, it would have been ruined if I had shot this scene with a strangely high tension, so I aimed to create a scene in the flow of the story, calmly and quietly, but with an explosion of emotions. It became one of the most highly rated scenes after its completion. After shooting this scene, I was grinning in the moving car. I was grinning in the car as we drove away after shooting this scene, and I knew it was going to be a good movie because we got it.

映画にはマスターショットと言われるシーン(カット)がある。その作品を象徴する代表的な画のことを言う。プロット(あらすじ)を書いたり、脚本を書いたりしている時にすでに頭に浮かんでいる情景。場合によってはその頭に浮かんだ最初の情景から物語に膨らませていくことだってある。ロケハンをしている時にこの情景を撮るための風景探しに苦労する。今回は小松島市の海岸だった。シナハン(脚本を書く際にその風景を見て物語を構築する。そのための下見)を脚本家の三好さんと回っている時にここへ来て。ああ、ここがマスターショットになるなあと思っていた。そしていよいよ撮影の日。美しい夕景にこだわり、ただでさえ逼迫しているスケジュールを助監督の市たちが懸命に時間を探ってくれ、かつ、毎日のように天気予報とにらめっこして、その時が来た。見事だった。情景も演技も。アドレナリンが出た。だからといってこのシーンだけ妙に高いテンションで撮っては台無しになるので話の流れの中、淡々と、静かに、けれど気持ちが爆発してしまうようなシーンを目指した。完成後に最も評価の高いシーンの一つになった。このシーンの撮影後に移動する車の中で僕はニヤニヤしていた。これが撮れたんだからいい映画になったと思えた時だった。
