「そろそろ」の便利さについて ～ About the usefulness of "そろそろ"
たくさんの日本語の言葉が好きですけど、多分ベストテンの一つの言葉が「そろそろ」だと思います。信じられないほど便利だと思います。
日本語のスピーキングを練習するために毎週４人の言語交換のパートナーと話したり、Italkiを通じて授業を毎週二回受けます。授業と言語交換の電話が終わると相手または先生がいつも「そろそろ。。。」ということを言われたことに気付きました。はじめて聞いた時に「そろそろの意味はなんですか」と聞いて、「この文脈で「終わりましょう」という意味だ」という答をくれました。
だからこれから会話が終わるような時点で注意を払いはじめて、ほとんど「そろそろ」を聞きました。「そろそろ行かなきゃ」ということをよく聞きました。でも英語だったら、そんなに体よくと簡単に会話とかを終わらせる言葉がないと思います。私は同僚とか友達とか会話が終わりたかったら、大体「何か用事がありますから、いかないとならない」という言い訳みたいの言葉を言いますけど、日本語では「そろそろ」だけでそういう意味を伝えることができるのはすごいと思います。相手が空気を読んで、言葉で表す必要がない感情がわかるのは本当にすごいと思います。
それだけじゃなくて、そういうことに注意を払えば払うほど会話の雰囲気だけで相手が「そろそろ」をまもなく言うことを察せられるようになりました。本当にビックリしました！
英語を話しながらたまに「どうして英語はそんなに便利な言葉がないかな」という思いが浮かびます。残念ながら、存在しません。和製英語が存在していますけど、英製日本語はどこですか笑
I like a lot of Japanese words but I think "そろそろ" is probably one of my top ten favourite Japanese words. It's unbelievably useful.
In order to practice my Japanese speaking skills, I talk to four language exchange partners and take two Japanese lessons on Italki every week. Every time the lesson or language exchange call ended, I realised that my partners or teachers always said "そろそろ...." The first time I heard it, I asked what it meant, and was told that, in this context, it means "let's finish the conversation".
From then on, I started to pay attention to when conversations seemed like they were ending, and I almost always heard "そろそろ". I almost always heard things like "It's about time I go". However, I don't think such a graceful and easy way of ending a conversation exists in English. If I want to end a conversation with colleagues or friends, I usually say that I have to do something, so I have to leave, or something similar, but in Japanese, you can convey this idea using just "そろそろ" and I think that's really cool. Your partner reads between the lines and understands what you want to say, without you saying it, which is really cool.
Not only that, but the more I paid attention to this, the more I was able to guess that my partner was going to say そろそろ based on the mood. I was really surprised by this!
Sometimes, when I'm talking in English, I think "Man, why doesn't English have such a useful word?" Unfortunately, no such word exists. Japanese-style English exists, but where is English-style Japanese lol.
