Alcohol matter

It is well known that native people in Okinawa have strong resistant to alcohol. Actually, it is true, I think. And especially in Miyakojima. It sounds happy? I don’t think so.

For a long time, and even now, there are a few entertainment in a island. Of course, we have a lot of fascinating activity and beautiful landscapes. Like diving or snorkeling in a beautiful beach, jogging or cycling with a great landscapes and road of less automobiles. But this kind of things requires a lot of energy and effort. I’m talking about entertainments like movie theater, Karaoke, night clubs, variety of restaurants and many kind of these services. In a ordinary lifestyles, people need entertainments which do not require any efforts. An ancient philosopher (I‘ve forgot exactly who it is) said that human beings need food, cloths and livings. And next, entertainment.

Drinking alcohol is a simple and easy entertainment. It requires a few money but no efforts, no training. If there are not any bars or Izakaya, you can drink in your house with your friend and have enough fun. I think this is why the people in countrysides drink much more than people living in a big city.

If you do not have weakness for alcohol GENETICALLY, you drink more and get more resistance to alcohol. But the resistance does not mean that it can beat alcohol. No one got the victory against the alcohol. Too much alcohol must spoil your body very slowly, day by day. It destroys relationship among friends or family, often. So this is the problem our society has.

Sorry, I’ve got depressed while I’m writing this facing PC with Awamori mixed with water. Yes, alcohol matter is difficult and complex. But let’s look at the other side.

There are a lot of islands in Okinawa, and each island has the way of drinking. Let me introduce the way of Miyakojima. Usually, a party begins with Orion beer and Kanpai. Then, they drink some glasses or cans of beer and begin to drink Awamori. But some people do not like Awamori despite they are native resident, they drink more beer or others. Awamori contains about 30~40 percent alcohol per volume. Most people likes to mix it with water to 3~4 times volume. In a traditional style (sorry, I’m not sure it is really Traditional but..) they prepare pots of Awamori already mixed from the beginning of the party. A pot can store 1~2L of Awamori. They drink it and surprisingly, it looks like they are drinking water or a kind of soft drinks.
And famous Otoori also begins. It is a traditional way of drink.(I’m sure it is. LOL) The starter of Otoori have a short speech like “Hello, everyone, I’m glad to see you and have this nice pary....or etc,etc.. “ And then he drains his glass of Awamori. He refill the glass and give it to a person next to him and let him also drain. He repeat it until everyone drinks his glass. Is that all? Definitely No. The Starter passes the glass and the pot of Awamori to the next man. And the man who is passed has to do the same. Speech and drink and let them drink. Otoori would end when everyone experiences the Starter... Or sometimes the second Otoori will begin. See? They drink much....includes me...

But do not misunderstand, please. This habit is not to force people to drink if they do not want. I heard this habit came from the gentleness when people in this island were very poor and do not have enough money to buy Awamori. At that time, when they could get Awamori, they had Otoori to share it equally with their friends. So you can deny to drink in Otoori if you have to drive or just you do not want to drink. It is NOT considered to be rude or selfish.

CAUTION: Be aware that Otoori might take your consciousness away easily.
