Thermae Romae
I stayed at Westin in Kyoto for the first time in a long time. It is located in the back of Kyoto and the view from the window is beautiful. The shape of the temple in the green of the mountain feels very impressive. I was very excited to hear that the spa was recently renewed and a large communal bath was opened. I imagined a beautiful bath made of wood and green materials on monotone stones. I didn't go at night, so I got up early in the morning and went to the spa. Oh! The expected image is the exact opposite. The large communal bath is made of marble in a bright atmosphere, it looks like Rome. Is it because of differentiating from other Kyoto wabi-sabi? Is it for inbound support? Is it the next generation standard? I should take a bath and think slowly about the strategy. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
