1年前と同じカード
さて、今回は中日ドラゴンズについて書きたいと思います。2024年9月13日に横浜スタジアムで行われた中日 vs DeNA戦を観に行ってきました。
9月13日？何か心当たりのある日付だと思って調べてみたら、なんとちょうど1年前の2023年9月13日にも横浜スタジアムで中日 vs DeNA戦を観に行ってました。奇跡です。
その日の試合は、相手先発の今永投手（現・カブス）の投球、細川選手・ソト選手（現・ロッテ）のホームランなどがあり、延長11回までもつれ込む大接戦でした。なかなか点が入らない中、11回表にビシエド選手がタイムリーヒットを打ち、ドラゴンズは勝ちました。とても嬉しかったのを覚えています。
あれから1年。結果はどうだったかというと…

今年はビジターに弱いですね…
シーズン序盤は1位になるほど調子がよかったのに…
今年僕が行った試合はホーム1試合、ビジター4試合でした。勝ったのはホームの1試合だけです。ビジターは3敗1分でした。
僕がドラゴンズファンになったきっかけ
中日ドラゴンズのファンになったきっかけは、父親が毎晩のようにテレビで野球を観ていたからです。僕も一緒に観ていたので、物心ついたときから自然と興味をもったのかなと思います。
記憶の中で最も古く残っているのは、2010年シーズン。当時小２です。浅尾投手（現・2軍投手コーチ）が毎試合のように速球と落ちる変化球で抑えていたのを観て好きになりました。しかし、あの日本シリーズ第7戦で決勝タイムリーを打たれたのを観て、「浅尾さんも打たれるんだな…」と思いました。そのまま日本一を逃し、悔しかったのを覚えています。
現地観戦はあまり行かない方でした。人生初の野球観戦は中日ではなく、ロッテの本拠地マリンスタジアム。当時3歳くらいで、千葉に住んでいました。ほとんど覚えていません。ナイターだったと思いますが。
ナゴヤドームに行くようになったのは2013年からで、父と一緒にほぼ毎年行ってます。入った瞬間に明るく綺麗な空間に圧倒され、わくわく感が増します。自慢の球場です。
大学生になって上京しても、毎年夏休みに帰省したタイミングで父とナゴヤドームに行ってます。2023年にはビジター＆外野応援デビュー。多くのドラゴンズファンの皆さんと応援し、喜怒哀楽を分かち合う時間はとても貴重です。
そんな感じで僕の人生は中日ドラゴンズと共にありました。一応、リーグ優勝と日本シリーズは知ってます（笑）。
スポーツ観戦という趣味から研究へ
ドラゴンズの試合をよく観るようになったことで、スポーツ観戦がやがて趣味になっていきました。野球の他に、サッカー、ラグビー、オリンピック競技など、観るのが好きなスポーツは多岐にわたります。勝利する選手・チームを予想したり、ルールを知ったりすることで、スポーツ観戦は楽しいものになります。
最近では、スポーツにおいてもデータ活用が盛んに行われるようになりましたね。野球中継の映像では、スコアやボールカウント、ランナーの位置の他、ピッチャーの投球数や打席に立つバッターの打率、ピッチャーが投げた球のコースや速さなど、多くのデータが表示されるようになりました。
現地観戦の際も、バックスクリーンに表示される球速や球数にも注視しながら観ています。
球数は1回あたり13球、7回で100球超えるくらいを目安にと思いながら観察している。
僕は理系で、高校までロボットとプログラミングを専門に学んでいましたが、大学に入ってから「データサイエンス」という分野に出会ったことで、データの観点でスポーツを楽しめるようになりたいと思い、スポーツアナリティクスの分野を研究をすることにしました。しかし、題材としている競技は野球ではなくサッカーです。なぜ？
野球は数字データが多いため、統計要素が多めです。例えば、試合ごとの打撃成績を調べるだけで、次の試合でホームランを打つかどうかを予測できてしまいます。8月18日にナゴヤドームに行く際、データを見ながら阪神・大山選手のホームランを何となく予想した結果、当たりました（笑）。
（ウソみたいな話）
一方、サッカーはピッチ上に選手とボールが複雑に入り混じっており、状況変化も激しいため、分析するのが難しいです。単純にボールを運んでゴールに入れる競技なのに、1~3点くらいしか得点しません。0点の試合もよくあります。数少ないゴールシーンはどのような条件がそろうと生まれるのでしょうか？それが知りたくて、試合映像を観ながらExcelとプログラミングを駆使して分析してます。
研究としてはまだまだの実力なので、僕が説明できるのはこれくらいです。詳しく知りたい方は、興味のあるスポーツの分析について調べてみるとよいでしょう。
これからのドラゴンズ
9月に入ると、シーズン終盤ということもあり、引退する選手が次々と現れます。中日からも2~3名ほど。なんとあの立浪監督まで。寂しいものです。14年ファンとしてみてきましたが、去る選手もいれば新たな選手もいて、その選手がやがてチームの主力になっていく。とても面白い世界です。
地元が誇るチームが戦う姿は、いつも夢と感動を与えてくれます。そのおかげで僕は自分のフィールド（大学・研究など）で頑張れてます。10年以上Aクラスがなく、思うように結果がついてこない厳しい状況にあり、SNSなどで不満を表すファンもたくさん見受けられます。僕も同じ気持ちです。でも、何があっても優勝するまで諦めない。そうである限り、僕はプロ野球において、中日ドラゴンズしか応援しません。そんな気持ちでずっといます。
地元名古屋が好きだから、ドラゴンズが好き。ドラゴンズの青が好き。
これからも中日ドラゴンズと共に。

The same game one year ago
This article is about Chunichi Dragons which is my favorite team in my hometown. I went to watch Dragons@BayStars at Yokohama Stadium on September 13, 2024.
Wait, September 13? I thought it was a familiar date, so I searched it, and I found that I had also gone to watch the same game at Yokohama Stadium on September 13, 2023, exactly one year ago. It was a miracle.
The game that day was a very close one, with pitching by the BayStars starting pitcher Shota Imanaga who is currently in Cubs, home runs by Dragons slugger Seiya Hosokawa, and Neftalí Soto who is currently in Chiba Lotte Marines, and the game went into extra innings. While it was difficult to score points, Dayan Viciedo hit an RBI single in the top of the 11th inning, and the Dragons won. I remember being very happy to win.
It's been a year since then. This is the result below.

Dragons are weak in the visitor game this season…
Dragons were doing so well because they were in first place in Central League at the beginning of this season…
I went to watch 5 games. 1 home game and 4 visitor games.
I won only one home game. 3 games lost 1 game tie in visitor.
Why am I a Dragons fan?
When I was little, my father watched Dragons baseball games on TV almost every night. I watched it with him, so I think naturally became interested in Dragons from the time I was old enough to understand.
The oldest memory I have is 2010 season. I was in second grade at elementary school. My favorite player was Takuya Asao who was a relief pitcher and currently second-team pitching coach. He held the opposing team with fastballs and falling curveballs in every game. However, in the Japan Series 2010 last game, he was hit with the game-winning one. I was like “Asao-san can get hit too…” I remember how disappointed I was when Dragons missed out on the championship.
I don’t often go to watch games at the stadium. The first time I ever went to watch a baseball game was not at Dragons but at Marine Stadium in Chiba, the home ground of Chiba Lotte Marines. I was about 3 years old and living in Chiba, so I don’t remember much about it. I think it was a night game.
I started going to Nagoya Dome in 2013 season, and I have been going almost every year with my father. The moment I enter the stand, I’m overwhelmed by the bright and beautiful space, and I’m excited. It’s a baseball stadium I’m proud of.
Even after moving to Tokyo as a university student, I still go to Nagoya Dome with my father every summer when I come back home. In 2023, I made my debut watching visitor games and cheering as an outfield stand supporter during bat. The time I spend cheering with so many Dragons fans and sharing their joys and sorrows of the game is very precious.
That’s how my life has been with Chunichi Dragons. I know about their league championship and the Japan Series (lol).
Watching sports as a hobby and research
Watching sports became my hobby as I started watching Dragons games more often. In addition to baseball, I like to watch a wide variety of sports, including football, rugby, Olympic games, and so on. Predicting the winning player or team and learning the rules make watching sports more fun.
Recently, data has become more widely used in sports competitions. In baseball broadcasts, a lot of data is displayed, such as the score, ball count, and runner positions, as well as the number of pitches thrown by the pitcher, the batting average of the batter at bat, and the course and speed of the pitcher’s pitches. When I watch a game at the stadium, I pay close attention to the pitch speed and count of the pitch displayed on the screen.
I’m a science major student and specialized in robotics and programming until high school, but after entering university, I found “Data Science” as my new study field and I decided to study Sports Analytics as my research to be able to enjoy sports from a data perspective. However, the sports competition I focus on is football, not baseball. Why?
Baseball has a lot of numerical data, so it has a lot of statistical elements. For example, just by searching at a player’s batting performance in each game, whether the player hit a homerun will be able to predict in the next game. When I went to Nagoya Dome on August 18th, I searched for data and somehow predicted a homerun by Yusuke Oyama, Hanshin Tigers, and I was right (lol). (It sounds like a lie)
On the other hand, football is difficult to analyze because players and ball are mixed in a complex situation on the pitch and situations change dramatically. Even though it’s a competition in which players simply carry the ball and put it in the goal, they only score about 1 to 3 points. Sometimes becomes a scoreless game. What conditions are necessary for the few goal scenes to be created in the game? That’s what I want to know, so I analyze the game video by using spreadsheets and programming.
I am not an expert in this field because my research experience is insufficient. If you want to know more, I recommend researching the analysis of the sport you are interested in.
The Future of Dragons
In September, some players announced retiring one after another, as it is the end of the season. Several of the players from Dragons. Even current manager Kazuyoshi Tatsunami. I’m sad. I’ve been a fan of Dragons for 14 years, and some players leave, and new players join and become the leading players of the team. It’s very interesting to watch.
Watching the team of my hometown proud of fighting always gives me dreams and inspiration. Thanks to that, I can do my best in my field (university, research, etc.). Dragons are in title and postseason drought in over 10 years, and in tough situations where they’re not getting the results they want. I see many fans posting their dissatisfaction on social media. I feel the same way. But no matter what, I won’t give up until the Dragons win. As long as that’s the case, I only support the Chunichi Dragons in NPB. I’ll always have that feeling.
I love my hometown Nagoya, so I love Dragons. I love the blue of Dragons. I’ll be with Chunichi Dragons forever.
