ThinkPad信者がIBM復活を期待する
私は自身のキャリアを日本アイ・ビー・エム株式会社（IBMの日本法人）の営業部門でスタートさせました。当時のIBMは、コンピュータメーカーとして世界をリードしており、他メーカーがIBMに追いつくには5年はかかると言われていました。その頃から、IBMは事業戦略にAIを活用しており、重要な意思決定がAIの判断をもとに行われていたとも聞いています。
そんな中、IBMはコンピュータメーカーからSI（システムインテグレーション）事業への転換を図り、その一環でパソコン事業を切り離しました。そして、中国企業と連携してLenovoというブランドが誕生しました。しかし、当初はLenovoという名前を知る人はほとんどおらず、2010年まではThinkPadにIBMとLenovoの名前が併記されて販売されていました。
ThinkPad信者になった理由
私がThinkPadを愛するようになったのは、IBM時代のThinkPadに込められた製品哲学に触れた経験があったからです。新製品が発売される前に、製品コンセプトや他社との差別化要素、そして他社が真似できない技術について詳しく説明を受けました。その際、先進技術を駆使しつつ、使いやすさや安全性を考え抜いて作られていることに感動しました。これが私をThinkPad信者にした大きな理由です。
そのため、Lenovoに事業が譲渡されると知ったときは本当にショックでした。自分が愛していたThinkPadがどうなってしまうのか、とても不安になったのを覚えています。「なぜ中国企業に？なぜLenovoなのか？」と何度も疑問が湧きました。
世界的な視点から見た背景
当時は"Made in Japan"が世界で評価されていましたが、米国政府が「日本に力を持たせるのは危険だ」と判断し、中国や韓国へ生産シフトが進んだと言われています。その結果、中国や韓国が成長する一方で、日本の製造業の地位は徐々に低下していきました。
個人的な考えですが、日本がそのまま製造業を続けられる環境を維持していれば、世界はもっと未来的な進化を遂げていたのではないかと思います。それほど当時の日本の技術力や生産能力は他国を大きくリードしていました。
Lenovoへの評価と懸念
現在、Lenovoの下でThinkPadは生産が続けられており、同社の努力は評価すべき点が多いと感じています。実際、ThinkPadはその堅牢性や信頼性から宇宙事業でも採用され続けています。この事実は、製品としての価値が非常に高いことを証明しています。
しかし、一方でカントリーリスクがどうしても頭をよぎります。特に製品の品質やセキュリティに関して、地政学的なリスクが影響する可能性があるのではないかと懸念しています。
世界の巨人 IBM ThinkPad 復活への願い
だからこそ、いつかThinkPadが米国や日本に戻り、再び最高品質で安全な製品を作り続けてほしいと願っています。昔、IBMパソコン製品の研究・開発拠点は、神奈川県にあった大和研究所であることを知る人は少ないと思います。
ThinkPadは単なるパソコンではなく、信頼と革新の象徴です。かつての栄光を取り戻し、新しい未来を切り開く存在として輝き続けてほしいと強く思っています。
ThinkPad devotees expect IBM to make a comeback
I started my career in the sales department of IBM Japan Ltd. (IBM's Japanese subsidiary). At the time, IBM was the world's leading computer manufacturer, and it was said that it would take five years for other manufacturers to catch up with IBM. From that time on, IBM has been using AI in its business strategy, and I have heard that important decisions were made based on AI judgments.
Meanwhile, IBM attempted to shift from computer manufacturer to SI (system integration) business, and as part of that, it separated its PC business. Then, in collaboration with a Chinese company, the Lenovo brand was born. However, at first, very few people knew the name Lenovo, and until 2010, ThinkPads were sold with both the IBM and Lenovo names written on them.
Why I became a ThinkPad devotee
The reason I fell in love with ThinkPads was because I had the experience of being exposed to the product philosophy that was embodied in ThinkPads during the IBM era. Before the release of a new product, I received a detailed explanation of the product concept, the differentiating factors from other companies, and the technology that other companies could not imitate. At that time, I was impressed by how the company was designed with advanced technology and great consideration given to ease of use and safety. This is a big reason why I became a ThinkPad believer.
So when I found out that the business was being transferred to Lenovo, I was really shocked. I remember being very anxious about what would happen to the ThinkPads I loved. "Why a Chinese company? Why Lenovo?" I repeatedly had questions.
Background from a global perspective
At the time, "Made in Japan" was highly regarded around the world, but it is said that the US government decided that "it is dangerous to let Japan have power," and production shifted to China and Korea. As a result, while China and Korea grew, the status of Japanese manufacturing gradually declined.
This is my personal opinion, but I think the world would have evolved in a more futuristic way if Japan had maintained an environment where it could continue manufacturing. Japan's technological capabilities and production capabilities at that time were so far ahead of other countries.
Evaluation and concerns about Lenovo
Currently, ThinkPads are still being produced under Lenovo, and I feel that there are many points to be appreciated about the company's efforts. In fact, ThinkPads continue to be used in space projects due to their robustness and reliability. This fact proves that they are extremely valuable as products.
However, on the other hand, country risk inevitably comes to mind. I am concerned that geopolitical risks may have an impact, especially on product quality and security.
Wish for the revival of ThinkPad
That is why I hope that one day ThinkPad will return to the United States or Japan and continue to make the highest quality and safe products again.
ThinkPads are not just computers, but a symbol of trust and innovation. I strongly hope that they will regain their former glory and continue to shine as a pioneer of a new future.
