ロバートは12歳でトゥバのホーメイ（喉歌）を知り、以来独学でホーメイおよびトゥバの楽器を習得しました。今や本場、トゥバでもよく知られるトゥバ音楽の継承者です。
ロバートは「楽器を弾き始めると、よく風が吹いてくる」と言います。このときも、彼が演奏を始めると、その周りだけまるで音楽を喜んでいるように草木がそよぎ始めました。
My name is Robert McLaughlin. I am nineteen years old and I was born in Killingworth, Connecticut into a musical family.
Since age twelve, I have been studying the music and culture of the Republic of Tuva in Siberia. I was introduced to Tuvan music by my father who is interested in physics. My dad read Tuva or Bust by Ralph Leighton, who was a friend and student of famed physicist Richard Feynman. The book talked about Leighton and Feynman’s adventures as they attempted their journey to Tuva, which lies on the northwestern border of Outer Mongolia.
Tuva or Bust mentioned throat singing, the vocal art of singing multiple notes at the same time. This book came up in a conversation with my dad because at that time I was studying the Mongol Empire in school. My father told me about the amazing overtone singing they have in this area of Asia. I went on the computer, looked up throat singing, and instantly fell in love with the sound. I felt I had to learn it. The culture has become a major part of my life. Tuvan culture is helping me to express myself, have a spiritual practice, and give back to the world. Now I am a throat singer. I build and play Tuvan instruments, and I study the spirituality of Tuva and many other indigenous cultures.

My name is Michael and I’ve been an enthusiast in Tuvan music and culture for 17 years. I was born and raised in NJ and currently reside in Rockland County, NY. I’ve worked in the printing and graphic arts industry for most of my adult life. I’m currently divorced but have been in a long term relationship for almost the last ten years with a wonderful woman who supports my interest in Tuva.
