Trying the Grimace shake (a review)
McDonald's has been in the US news a lot lately. E. coli found in onions and Donald Trump working fries in Pennsylvania. However the news that resonated with me most in Japan was.. the Grimace shake going on sales 30 Oct.
I usually don't go to McDonald's but I do like their marketing, especially the 'nostalgic' ones, so I couldn't resist not trying the Grimace shake. The last time I went to McDonald's, I tried my favourite Oreo McFlurry for the first time in a while, only to get a mouth sore the next day.
30 Oct was a balmy day so I went to my local McDonald's, which is only a 10 min walk away. The store was musty, and I considered takeout but figured it would melt, so found a seat in the corner of a store. Upon taking a seat a fly landed on my arm which I squatted and I noticed another creepy-crawly on the window so already the store was disgusting. Not surprising because the only staff member coming out in front was a Filipino woman, and the rest of the staff seemed to be away at the kitchens.
I haven't tried McDonald's milkshakes in a while, but my general impression from the Grimace shake was that it didn't particularly taste of blueberry yoghurt. It just tasted like generic McDonald's milkshakes, which was fine by me.
The only thing that really bothered me was that the store was so hot that, as you can see from the state of the straw, I think it was melting at a rapid pace. Although I didn't (want to) open the lid. And thank for the uplifting message, table.
Did it have a sweet aftertaste? Yes. Did I feel guilty for drinking it? Yes. Did I walk more steps than usual afterwards? Yes. Did I get a mouth sore the next day? NO! Do I want to try it again? Not really, but maybe on another occasion like Grimace's actual birthday…
