#118 接続詞asの用法について
接続詞asの用法と言えば、基本的なものとして①〜ので（理由）、②〜とき（時）、③〜ように（様態）、④〜つれて（比例）がありますが、それら以外にも比較の原級表現（as[形]/[副]as）や譲歩のas（[形] as S (may) be）などのasも接続詞です（ただし、比較の原級表現については、1つ目のasは副詞）。
接続詞asの基本的な用法
① 〜ので（理由）
② 〜とき（時）
③ 〜ように（様態）
④ 〜つれて（比例）
また、直前の名詞を修飾する形容詞節を導くasも存在します。

比較の原級表現や譲歩のasを接続詞として認識していないならば、これらの表現の文法構造を理解していない証拠なので、きちんと押さえましょう。
1. just as S V
副詞のjustが接続詞asを修飾する場合、asの意味は②〜とき（時）か④〜ように（様態）のどちらかです。
just as S V
① ちょうど〜するとき
② ちょうど〜のように
Just as he was going out, there was a great earthquake.
ちょうど彼が出かけようというときに大地震があった
He arrived just as I was leaving.
ちょうど私が出かけようとしたときに彼がついた．
Despite all his efforts, everything was just as it had been before.
彼のあらゆる努力にもかかわらず，すべてが以前と同じだった。
2. 比較の原級表現
◆ 前の as は副詞，後ろの as が接続詞
3. 譲歩のas
この構文は, as A as の最初の as が省略されて生じたものだが，｟主に米｠では今でもこの形でも使う：
As tired as I was, I couldn’t sleep. 疲れていたけれども眠れなかった
Strange as it may seem, there was nobody in the room.
奇妙に思われるかもしれないが，部屋には誰もいなかった
4. ［直前の名詞を限定して］（…する）ような
Life as we know it would be impossible without water.
我々が知っているような生命体は水なしではありえないだろう
(itはlifeをさす)
the universe as we know it
我々が知っている宇宙
◆ as we know it は一般的な陳述に用いる
the history of the United States as we know it
我々が知っているアメリカの歴史
◆ know の後に it がついていることで関係代名詞と区別できる
5. as if＋仮定法「まるで～」
as if は He acts as（he would act）if he were in love with her. のような省略から生まれた

(5) 太字の部分を和訳しなさい。（早稲田大）
It's a good thing for life on Earth that there is a greenhouse effect. Without it, the Earth would be about 60 degrees colder on average. So, a little greenhouse effect is good for live on Earth. But as more and more heat-trapping gases are added to the atmosphere, the greenhouse effect gets stronger.
(6) 和訳しなさい。Harsh as reality is, too often what people dread is "in the mind" rather than real.
(7) 和訳しなさい。
In order to find descendants of the dinosaurs in today's world, strange as it may seem, we need to turn to birds.
(8) 和訳しなさい。 It can be argued, indeed, that the conservative movement, as we know it today, is largely a product of the Industrial Revolution.
(9) 和訳しなさい。
The origin of universities as we know them is commonly traced back to the twelfth century.
(10) 太字部分を和訳しなさい。（京都大）
There are quite a number of people who disapprove of fairy tales for children on various grounds. Let us take the most reasonable first: those who claim that the fairy tale as we know it from Grimm and Anderson is not viable* in modern culture.（viable：生存可能な）
(11) 和訳しなさい。（京都大）
Because Judy Garland has existed as a celebrity in this culture, we are aware of the story of her life as it has entered our cultural awareness, becoming a mythic narrative of the unhappiness of the successful.
(12) 和訳しなさい。
I became so absorbed in the story that I lost all consciousness of the reading process. I was one with the story, as if I were experiencing it firsthand.
(13) 和訳しなさい。Common stupidity consist in taking a partial view of the situation and actingupon that partial view as if it represented the whole.
(14) 英訳しなさい。
暗い夜のあとに輝かしい朝が来るように，不幸のあとには必ず幸福がやってくる．
(15) 英訳しなさい。（早大）
日本の高等学校で英語を教えるように，米国の高等学校ではフランス語やスペイン語を教えている。
(16) 英訳しなさい。
彼はあたかも百万円も持っているような口ぶりだが，実は文なしだ．

若い人たち同士が話しているのを聞いていると，まるで外国にでもいるかのように感じることがときどきあります。
