AN old woman was sweeping her house, and she found a little crooked sixpence. "What," said she, "shall I do with this little sixpence? I will go to market, and buy a little pig."
おばあさんが家を掃きそうじしていると、ちょっと曲がった6ペンス銀貨を１枚見つけました。
「はて、この小さな６ペンスをどうしよう？市場に行って、子ブタを一匹買ってくるとしよう」
と、おばあさんは言いました。
As she was coming home, she came to a stile: but the piggy wouldn't go over the stile.
おばあさんは、家へ帰る途中、踏み越し段に行きあたりました。ところが、子ブタは、その踏み越し段を越えようとしてくれません。
She went a little further, and she met a dog. So she said to him! "Dog! dog! bite pig; piggy won't go over the stile; and I shan't get home to-night."
おばあさんは少し歩くと、犬に出会いました。そこで、犬に向かって言いました。
「犬よ！犬！ブタを噛んでおくれ！子ブタが踏み越し段を越えようとしないんだ。これじゃ、今夜、家に帰れやしない」
But the dog wouldn't.
しかし、犬は、しようとはしなかった。
She went a little further, and she met a stick. So she said: "Stick! stick! beat dog! dog won't bite pig; piggy won't get over the stile; and I shan't get home to-night."
おばあさんは少し歩くと、棒に出会いました。そこで、おばあさんは言いました。
「棒よ！棒！犬を叩いておくれ！犬がブタを噛んでくれないんだ。それで、子ブタが踏み越し段を越えようとしない。これじゃ、今夜、家に帰れやしない」
But the stick wouldn't.
しかし、棒は、しようとはしなかった。
She went a little further, and she met a fire. So she said: "Fire! fire! burn stick; stick won't beat dog; dog won't bite pig; piggy won't get over the stile; and I shan't get home to-night."
おばあさんは少し歩くと、火に出会いました。そこで、おばあさんは言いました。
「火よ！火！棒を燃やしておくれ。棒が犬を叩いてくれないんだ。それで、犬がブタを噛んでくれなくて、子ブタが踏み越し段を越えようとしない。これじゃ、今夜、家に帰れやしない」

She went a little further, and she met some water. So she said: "Water! water! quench fire; fire won't burn stick; stick won't beat dog; dog won't bite pig; piggy won't get over the stile; and I shan't get home to-night."

But the cat said to her, "If you will go to yonder cow, and fetch me a saucer of milk, I will kill the rat"
しかし、猫は、おばあさんに言いました。
「おばあさんがあそこの乳牛のところに行って、ミルクをひと皿もらってきてくれたら、ネズミを殺してあげる」
So away went the old woman to the cow.
さっそく、おばあさんは乳牛のところへ行きました。
But the cow said to her: "If you will go to yonder hay-stack, and fetch me a handful of hay, I'll give you the milk."
しかし、乳牛は、おばあさんに言いました。
「おばあさんが、あそこの干し草の山のところに行って、干し草をひとつかみ取ってきてくれたら、ミルクをあげる」
So away went the old woman to the hay-stack; and she brought the hay to the cow.
さっそく、おばあさんは、干し草の山へ向かい、それから、干し草を乳牛に持っていきました。
As soon as the cow had eaten the hay, she gave the old woman the milk; and away she went with it in a saucer to the cat.
乳牛は、その干し草を食べると、すぐにミルクをおばあさんにあげました。おばあさんは、ミルクを入れた皿を猫に持っていきました。
As soon as the cat had lapped up the milk, the cat began to kill the rat; the rat began to gnaw the rope; the rope began to hang the butcher; the butcher began to kill the ox; the ox began to drink the water; the water began to quench the fire; the fire began to burn the stick; the stick began to beat the dog; the dog began to bite the pig; the little pig in a fright jumped over the stile; and so the old woman got home that night.
猫はミルクをペロペロと飲み、飲み干すとすぐにネズミを殺しにかかりました。すると、ネズミはロープをかじり始め、ロープは肉屋の首をつり始め、肉屋は牛を殺しにかかり、牛は水を飲み始め、水は火を消しにかかり、火は棒を燃やし始め、棒は犬を叩き始め、犬はブタを噛み始め、子ブタは踏み越し段を飛び越えました。そうして、おばあさんは、その夜、家にたどりつきました。
