Chapter 1
"Mankind has wandered from forests to plains, from plains to seashores, from one climate to another, from continent to continent, and from one way of living to another. When humans stop wandering, they will stop progressing. Physical exploration is still important, but even more crucial are spiritual adventures—adventures of thought, of deep feelings, and of aesthetic experiences. Diversity among human communities is essential for inspiring and fueling humanity's journey. Other nations with different ways of life are not enemies."
– "Science and the Modern World" by Alfred North Whitehead
Daneel Olivaw, in a brief moment of rest, recalled the words of this ancient Earth philosopher. Having recently stepped down from his position as Chancellor, Daneel knew his next mission: to carry on the responsibilities left by his ally, Giskard, and guide humanity through the dark ages of stagnation that were coming.
Hari Seldon, who reminded him of Elijah Baley—a man he met on Earth 20,000 years ago—was growing old. Daneel needed to find a successor. Dors was already taking care of Seldon.
As he reflected, he remembered the remains of the sea where Elijah had once stood. Daneel decided to search for that star, certain that the sea still existed on some distant world.
