"Perfect Days" doesn't sound like the most promising night out at the cinema. The gentle slice-of-life drama follows a middle-aged man who drives around Tokyo and cleans its public toilets. But the humane and philosophical character study has rightly been nominated for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.
The film's laconic hero, Hirayama (Koji Yakusho), takes pride in his work. He is content to spend his spare time alone, reading novels. watering plants and taking photos. There are allusions to Hirayama's affluent but troubled past, but he appears to be wholly focused on the present.
