前回に続いて、ジェームズ・アレンの名著「AS A MAN THINKETH」を英語と日本語で読んでいきます。

A man does not come to the almshouse or the jail by the tyranny of fate or circumstance, but by the pathway of grovelling thoughts and base desires.

人は、運命や境遇の圧制によって、救貧院や牢獄に入るのではなく、卑屈な思いや卑俗な欲望の道によって入るのです。

Nor does a pure-minded man fall suddenly into crime by stress of any mere external force; the criminal thought had long been secretly fostered in the heart, and the hour of opportunity revealed its gathered power.

また、純粋な心の持ち主が、単なる外的な力のストレスによって突然犯罪に陥ることもありません。犯罪者の思考は長い間、心の中で密かに育まれていたのです。そして、チャンスの時が、集結した力を明らかにしたのです。
