3. Everything everywhere all at once: designing for edge case

3:30 AM - 4:15 AM GMT+9(日本時間)

A perfect feature is designed, the user flow on Figma is set up and the deliverables are pixel-perfect. But what happens when the almost-unthinkable occurs: a user with an unusually large thumb uses their smartphone on the night of a full moon—the Internet connection is unstable, and then they accidentally drop their phone into the toilet while pressing the button. We like to focus on the positive paths in the world of feature development. And when it comes to edge cases, it feels like something that would only happen in a parallel universe. However, in reality, these things are occurring all the time. In this talk, I'll share my experiences with an example of a simple voting feature that turned out very complex. I'll describe how we identify, design, and develop solutions when we stumble upon edge cases just like these during the feature development process.

Speaker: Yung-Ching Chiu - Senior Product Designer, Grammarly

8-2. DESIGN SYSTEMS IN TRANSITION: ANXIETY, AI, AND WHERE WE GO
Design Systems are made to manage change. Mass layoffs throughout our industry have changed the vibes in tech rapidly, AI is moving quickly to reshape our design and engineering practices from the foundations, and all the bubbling anxiety that comes from it are now here. When the world is changing so quickly, how do we use the frameworks, mindset, and skills we have as system builders to navigate what’s here and what’s to come? And what does that future look like? After eight years building design systems and the organizations that run them at DoorDash, Kathryn Gonzalez quit her job to explore the future of the space and make sense of this moment in time in our industry. She’ll share her stories, what the AI-assisted future of systems could look like, how she’s dealing with the anxiety of this critical time for the work we do, and what it all means for the people in this industry. And yes, this talk idea was created with the help of AI.

Speaker: Kathryn Gonzalez - Head of Design Infrastructure, 1st Designer and UI Engineer, On sabbatical, previously at DoorDash

10. Fonts are software now, and that's awesome

2:00 PM - 2:45 PM PT in Hall E
6:00 AM - 6:45 AM GMT+9(日本時間)

There was a time in the early ages of the internet when web designers would embed little flash files into their website for each heading in their layout. They did this to be able to embed and use typefaces other than the few fonts that were considered “web safe”. Since then, a lot has changed on the internet. These days, designers and developers have many choices when selecting type for their projects. As one of the co-founders of Google Fonts, Tobias believes that open source fonts are an important way to provide access to typography for anyone designing and building things on the internet—especially in regions of the world that don’t use the Latin alphabet. This talk will cover how new technologies like variable fonts are changing type to be more like software—and will open up entirely new possibilities in digital spaces.

Speaker: Tobias Kunisch - Design Lead, Google Fonts, Google

6:00 AM - 6:45 AM GMT+9(日本時間)

I’ve been thinking about the process of archaeology as it pertains to building software - in particular, the software behind Figma. I’ve been writing code for the design editor since I was an intern in 2017, and in my years of working here, I’ve seen entire parts of the codebase stripped away, rewritten, and evolve. As software engineers, I’d like to suggest a reframing of our roles. We’re more than those who write code. We’re also the stewards of the systems that came before us, and the architects of the future. What can we do to set up the teammates that come after us for success, as we build upon our codebases? What are practices that can help us pay down tech debt, even as we write new features? How do we unearth years of past code commits to find the gems of wisdom that guide our future implementations?

Speaker: Shirley Miao - Software Engineer, Figma

16-2. LEAVING FLATLAND: EASING THE TRANSITION TO XR DESIGN
Speaker: Michelle Cortese - XR Design Lead, Meta

Can an audience of design thinkers absorb the core processes and ideological frameworks of XR product design and find themselves ready to leave 2D design behind in just 40 minutes? Let’s find out. This talk is a condensed version of a graduate-level class I teach at NYU that unpacks the tools, processes and ethical considerations of VR design—specifically architected to help 2D designers transition into XR. The syllabus culminates design strategies acquired through eight-plus years of work in VR, nearly six years at Meta Reality Labs (née Oculus), and the development of multiple VR design systems (like Horizon Worlds) and XR design publications.

18. How to create pixel-perfect UIs with Storybook & Figma

3:15 PM - 4:00 PM PT in Room 203
7:15 AM - 8:00 AM GMT+9(日本時間)

Converting designs into actual coded UI is like playing a game of telephone. Designer sign-off is critical to catching UI bugs before shipping—but with thousands of possible variants, it becomes overwhelming. Thankfully, there's a better way. Thousands of companies use Storybook to develop components and capture their states as stories. Meanwhile, designers model the exact same states as variants in Figma. Connecting Storybook and Figma lets you speed up design sign-off and ship pixel-perfect UIs with less grunt work. In this talk, Varun will show you how to embed Figma files into Storybook and vice versa so that your code and designs are always available side-by-side.

Speaker: Varun Vachhar - DX Engineer, Chromatic

19. Why do we build what we build?

3:15 PM - 4:00 PM PT in Room 205
7:15 AM - 8:00 AM GMT+9(日本時間)

When companies "hyperscale" growth and change are so rapid that it's hard to keep up and existing norms and practices don't work. Go inside Figma to learn how customer listening practices have changed and the way a service-oriented mindset protects what's made the company so special. The hope? That you'll find something helpful for your own work.

Speaker: Sho Kuwamoto - VP of Product, Figma
