【イベントレポート】「日本の文化体験 教育ツーリズム by 清水寺×NLCS Kobe」

2025年2月1日（土）、世界最高峰の英国インターナショナルスクール『North London Collegiate School Kobe（NLCS Kobe／ノースロンドン神戸）』は、世界遺産・清水寺（京都府京都市）で「日本の文化体験 教育ツーリズム by 清水寺×NLCS Kobe」を開催しました。当日の様子をレポートにてお届けします！
◆“本物”の伝統文化を体験してその文化的な背景や精神を理解する
NLCS英国本校が大切にする「探究型学習」をベースにした教育プログラムに加え、日本の伝統文化や六甲山の大自然を生かした独自カリキュラムを採用するNLCS Kobe。
日本の伝統文化には、長い歴史の中で培われた価値観や感性が含まれており、それを体験して知ることは単に技術や知識を習得するだけでなく、自国の文化の素晴らしさを再認識できるほか、日本人としての文化的なアイデンティティを形成する上でもとても重要です。また、多様な視点を持つことで、コミュニケーション能力や問題解決能力も向上し、社会での適応力やより豊かな人間関係を築くことにも繋がると考えています。
このような独自カリキュラムを導入することで、海外からも注目されるような世界基準の教育を目指すNLCS Kobeは、開校を前に、1200年以上の歴史を誇る世界遺産「清水寺」との特別コラボレーションイベントを企画しました。
当日は、一般応募から選ばれた親子20組が、清水寺の僧侶であり執事を務める大西英玄氏による読経、両足院の伊藤東凌氏による座禅のほか、特別ゲストとして茶人・伊住禮次朗氏をお招きしたお茶会を体験。記憶に残る体験を通して、子供たちに日本の素晴らしさや日本人としての誇りを感じてもらうだけでなく、親御様にとってもNLCS Kobeの授業スタイルを体感できる特別な機会となりました。
◆清水寺 大西英玄氏・建仁寺 両足院 伊藤東凌氏・茶人 伊住禮次朗氏が直接指導
「本物に触れ、深く探究する」NLCS Kobeでの日本文化カリキュラムのエッセンスを、清水寺と建仁寺両足院にて一足先に体験していただける機会となりました。観光として体験するだけでなく、国際バカロレア（IB）の理念に基づき、僧侶や茶道・裏千家家元の方々がさまざまな問いかけを投げかけながら、子供たちの経験と学びを深めてくださいました。
「坐禅をしている間、どんな音が耳に入ってきましたか？」
「目を閉じている3分間、長く感じましたか？短く感じましたか？」
「仏足石に向かって祈るとき、誰のことを心に思い浮かべましたか？」
自分たちの経験に真剣に向き合い、感じたことを活き活きと話す子供たちの様子が印象的でした。日本で生まれ育つことで育まれるアイデンティティや価値観は、変化しつづける国際社会の中で拠って立つ足場として、未来のかれらの活躍を力強く支えてくれるはずです。子どもたちの目の輝きは、そんなNLCS Kobeのビジョンにより確信を持たせてくれるものでした。
◆子供たちにとって新しい視点や価値観を育む貴重な経験に
「ちゃんと理解して体験できるかな？」といった親御さんの心配をよそに、お子様は伝統文化を新しい体験と捉え、自然と受け入れて楽しんでいる様子でした。参加者のコメントを一部ご紹介します。
【お子様】
・“日本には素晴らしい文化がたくさんある”ということは知ってはいたけど、実感することができました。日本で生まれたけど知らなかった体験がたくさんできて嬉しかったです。
・これまでやったことない初めての体験ばかりで不思議な1日でした。坐禅では、鼻から吸って口から吐いたり、頭の中で呼吸の秒数を数えたり、普段は意識しない呼吸に集中することということが一番印象に残りました。
・禅とか文化とか難しい言葉だと感じていました。でも実際に体験してみるとすごく身近なことで自分たちの生活の中に根付いているんだということがわかりました。
【親御様】
・この清水寺で日本の伝統文化を、本物の体験を子供にさせてあげられるということで参加しました。一方で、親の私たちにとってもこのような機会はなかなかないので子供と同じ目線で一緒に体験できるということが貴重な機会になりました。
・子供たちにとってはあまり馴染みのないことで心配していましたが、子供たちなりに想像力や気づきを持って体験してくれて、成長を感じることができた1日でした。
・一つひとつの意味を子供と一緒に考えながら体験をしたこの時間は、大人になってもずっと記憶に残ってくれると思います。
・今日のような体験を積み重ねて、将来海外に行った時に日本の素晴らしさを語れるような人になってほしいなと思います。
◆北法相宗音羽山清水寺 成就院住職 大西英玄氏のコメント
やはり子供たちは感性が豊かですよね。大人になると経験を積み重ねている分、慣れが生じるものでどうしても感性が鈍くなってしまうのですが、子供たちの姿を見ているといろんな気づきがあり、我々が学ばせてもらったなと感じる1日でした。子供たちにはこれから「正解が一つではない」ということを学んでほしいなと思います。自分の正義、自分の主張を通すのではなく、世の中には「いろんな正解」があります。もちろん、自分の意思を過度に曲げるということではありませんが、いろんなものの見方、価値観、考え方があるということを知って学んでいってほしいです。
◆建仁寺 両足院 伊藤東凌氏のコメント
皆さん積極的に学ぶ姿勢を持って参加してくださいました。お子様一人ひとりの個性を壊さないように体験してもらうということを意識しました。「今は匂いを嗅ぐ」「今は音を聴く」など、自分の意識で自分の感覚を使うことをお伝えしました。自分の心を自分で落ち着かせることができる方法を習得してもらえるといいなと思っています。
◆茶人 伊住禮次朗氏のコメント
子供たちは感覚も敏感なので、お茶の手前や作法の説明というより、こちらが伝えたいメッセージをシンプルに届けることが大事だなと感じました。まずお伝えしたのは、お茶を飲むこの空間を楽しむこと。天井照明がなく、横の窓からの採光がベースとなる日本家屋での影の落ち方など、この建物がどのようにできているのかを考えてもらいました。それが、日本文化の礎になっていて、日本の美意識の根幹になっているということを、子供たちなりに解釈して、少しでも得たものがあるといいなと思っております。

どこで、どんな環境で育ったのか、子供たちが大人になっていろんな人と会話をする時にその経験がとても大事になってきます。日本で育ったこの環境が当たり前だと思いがちですが、「この環境で育ったからこそ私がいる」という日本人としてのアイデンティティを持って成長していってほしいです。今日は子供たちだけでなく、親御様も楽しんでくださっていたので嬉しかったです。また、参加者同士や学校スタッフと仲良くお話をされていて、これから開校して一緒に学校を作っていくというコミュニティが見れたのが良かったなと感じました。

本日のイベントは本当に素晴らしいものでした。私自身にとっても、他の先生方や生徒たちにとっても、日本文化を深く理解する貴重な機会となりました。今日のイベントを通して改めて実感したのは、私たちの学校が築いている特別なコミュニティの存在です。学問的な優秀さを追求する、そして学校を中心としたコミュニティー作りをすることだけでなく、日本やその文化について学び、時には立ち止まり、振り返ることができる環境を提供することも、とても重要だと感じました。そして、それは日本のご家庭にとっても、海外から来られたご家庭にとっても、同じように価値のあることだと思います。
私たちの教育が提供できる機会とともにこのような特別な体験を提供できることは、私たちの学校の大きな魅力の一つです。今日のような体験は、世界でも誇れるような体験だと思います。日本で生まれた皆さんにとっては当たり前なことかもしれませんが、世界的にみると特別に感じられるものであり、日本の誇れる文化なのだということを感じてもらえると嬉しいです。
◆NLCS Kobeでは、このような文化体験をカリキュラムとして学ぶ
NLCS Kobeでは、日本の伝統文化を独自のカリキュラムとして取り入れ、国際バカロレアの探究学習のテーマの中で、日本の歴史や文化を他国の文化との比較も交えながら理解を深めていきます。基本的にはNLCSの教師が主導しますが、同イベントのように、時には専門家の方を招いて子供たちが質問をしながら実際に体験できるような、“本物”に触れる学びを展開していきます。

[Event Report] "Japanese Cultural Experience Educational Tour by Kiyomizu-dera Temple x NLCS Kobe"
On Saturday, February 1, 2025, North London Collegiate School Kobe (NLCS Kobe), the world's top British international school, held the "Japanese Cultural Experience Educational Tour by Kiyomizu-dera Temple x NLCS Kobe" at the World Heritage Site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple (Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture). Here is a look back at this memorable day!
◆ Experiencing the authentic traditional culture: understanding its cultural background and spirit
NLCS Kobe embraces a unique curriculum that integrates Japan’s rich traditional culture and the natural beauty of Mt. Rokko, alongside the “inquiry-based learning” approach valued by its UK main branch.
Traditional Japanese culture is not just about learning skills or knowledge—it carries deep-rooted values and sensibilities shaped over centuries. By experiencing it firsthand, pupils and students not only gain appreciation for their heritage but also develop a stronger sense of cultural identity. Additionally, we believe that having a diverse perspective will improve your communication skills and problem-solving abilities, leading to greater adaptability in society and richer human relationships.
By introducing such a unique curriculum, NLCS Kobe aims to provide a world-class education that will attract attention from overseas. Ahead of the school’s opening, NLCS Kobe organized a special collaboration event with Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a World Heritage Site with over 1,200 years of history.
On the event day, 20 parent-child pairs, selected through a public application process, participated in a series of enriching activities:
• Sutra chanting led by Mr. Eigen Onishi, a monk and deacon at Kiyomizu-dera Temple
•Zazen (Zen meditation) guided by Mr. Toryo Ito of Ryosoku-in Temple
•A tea ceremony with special guest tea master Mr. Reijiro Izumi
Through this memorable experience, not only did the children feel the splendour of Japan and their pride as Japanese. For parents, it was a rare opportunity to witness NLCS Kobe’s unique teaching approach in action.
◆Direct instruction from Mr. Eigen Onishi of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Mr. Toryo Ito of Ryosoku-in of Kennin-ji Temple, and tea master Mr. Reijiro Izumi
This was an opportunity for the children to experience the essence of the Japanese culture curriculum at NLCS Kobe, which is to "touch the real thing and explore deeply," at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Ryosoku-in of Kennin-ji Temple. Not only was it a tourist experience, but based on the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB), monks and heads of the tea ceremony and Urasenke schools of tea ceremony posed various questions to deepen the children's experience and learning.
"What sounds did you notice while you were doing zazen?"
"Did the three minutes of meditation feel long or short?"
"Who came to mind when you prayed in front of the Buddha's footprint?"
It was impressive to see the children seriously facing their experiences and talking vividly about what they felt. The identity and values that they develop by being born and raised in Japan will serve as a foothold for them to stand on in an ever-changing international society, and will strongly support their future success. The sparkle in the children's eyes reaffirmed the vision behind NLCS Kobe.
◆A Transformative Experience for Children and Parents Alike
At first, some parents were unsure if their children would fully grasp the experience. However, the children embraced traditional culture with curiosity and openness, making the day a truly enriching learning journey. Here’s what some participants had to say:
[Children’s Voices]
- I knew that Japan has a lot of wonderful cultural traditions, but I was able to experience it for myself. I was happy to be able to experience many things I didn't know about even though I was born in Japan.
- It was an unusual day filled with many new experiences that I had never done before. During zazen, the most memorable thing was that you inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, count the number of breaths in your head, and concentrate on your breathing, something I rarely pay attention to in daily life."
- I thought that Zen and culture were difficult concepts. But after experiencing them, I realised that these are something very familiar and deeply rooted in our lives.
[Parents’ Voices]
- We joined this event to give our children a firsthand experience of traditional Japanese culture. But as parents, we also rarely get such opportunities, so it was truly special to share this experience with them.
- We were worried that our children might find it unfamiliar, but they approached it in their own way, using their imagination and awareness, and it was a day where we were really able to see their growth.
- We reflected together on the meaning behind each moment. I believe this experience will stay with them even when they become adults.
- I hope that they continue to build on experiences like today and become people who can talk about the wonderfulness of Japan when they go abroad in the future.

Children have a sharp sensitivity, don’t they? As adults, we accumulate experience and become accustomed to it, so our sensitivity inevitably becomes dull. Watching the children today reminded me of many things—it was a learning experience for us as well. I want children to learn that there is not just one right answer. Instead of pushing through your own sense of justice and your own opinions, I hope they learn that the world offers many valid perspectives and ways of thinking.

Everyone participated with a positive attitude towards learning. We aimed to provide an experience that respected each child's individuality We told them to use their senses with their own consciousness, such as "now smell the smell" or "now listen to the sound." I hope they will learn how to find peace within themselves.
◆Comment from Mr. Reijiro Izumi, Tea Master
Children have keen senses, so rather than explaining formal tea ceremony etiquette, I focused on conveying its essence. I invited them to appreciate the space around them—how the shadows fall in a traditional Japanese house without ceiling lights, relying instead on natural light from side windows. I hope that the children will be able to interpret in their own way that this is the foundation of Japanese culture and the root of Japanese aesthetics, and gain something from it.

Where and in what environment children grow up shapes who they become. As they meet people from different backgrounds in the future, these childhood experiences will become invaluable. It's easy to take for granted that they grew up in Japan in this environment, but I want them to grow up with a sense of identity as a Japanese person, knowing that "I am who I am because I grew up in this environment." I was glad that not only the children but also their parents enjoyed themselves today. In addition, seeing the participants talk amicably with each other and the school staff, I felt very glad to see the community that will open and build a school together.

Today's event was truly remarkable. It was a valuable opportunity for myself, the other teachers, and the children to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. What I realised again through today's event is the existence of a special community that our school has built. I felt that it is very important not only to pursue academic excellence and to create a community centred around the school, but also to provide an environment where pupils and students can learn about Japan and its culture, and sometimes stop and reflect. And I think that this is equally valuable for Japanese families and families who come from overseas.
One of the great attractions of our school is that we can provide such special experiences along with the opportunities that our academic programme can provide. I think that experiences like today's are what we can be proud of in the world. What may seem ordinary to those born in Japan can be extraordinary from a global perspective. I hope our pupils and students will recognize and take pride in the cultural richness that Japan has to offer.
◆Cultural Experiences as Part of NLCS Kobe’s Curriculum
At NLCS Kobe, traditional Japanese culture is an integral part of the curriculum. Students explore Japanese history and culture through comparisons with other cultures, aligning with the International Baccalaureate’s inquiry-based learning approach. While NLCS teachers typically lead these lessons, experts like the ones featured in this event are occasionally invited to provide authentic, hands-on experiences.
