訳例
お隣のイヌがいつも、親友が家にいるかどうかを確認するために、ドアのベルを鳴らすんです。

neighbor：お隣さん、隣人
ring：鳴らす

「もし」ではない「if」について
「if」は、「もし〜ならば」という仮定法の接続詞として用いられることが多い一方で、「whether」と同じく「〜かどうか」という意味の名詞節を作ることもできます。

「今日の英語」の「if his best friend is home」は、「親友が家にいるかどうか」という名詞節になります。
